Who Gives Kudos:

Tuesday, June 16, 2009
So I'm gearing up to hit the stage at Balance in Calgary this past weekend, which I'd been booked to play on quite short notice. Sitting out on the patio with great weather, great friends, and absolutely fantastic caesars, the night was shaping up to be a good one.

Out of the blue my best mate Jamie from Australia rings up my mobile frantically telling me that Facebook is launching their custom URL username's RIGHT FUCKING NOW and that I need to get on it immediately if I want the correct ones before someone else steals them. I had been following the news during the week but had absentmindedly forgot about when they were rolling out the open canvas to select your name. Apparently within the first 3 minutes over 200,000 usernames were claimed. Thankfully, I had my trusty iPhone and logged onto my account and grabbed the /djchrisallen and /officialdjchrisallen URL's for my personal and fan page respectively. As of June 13 (less than 24hrs), over 3 million usernames had been claimed, which is a truckload of traffic towards Facebook.

However, on a slightly sour note, I appear to be one of the lucky ones in the mass-username clambering. Twitter posts (1, 2, 3, 4) from Gareth Emery show he wasn't as successful as someone pulled the /garethemery username from under him before he had a shot (which oddly goes nowhere at the moment). Same goes for /paulvandyk, /arminvanbuuren, /markusschulz, and I'm sure countless others. What has been quietly dubbed as 'Facesquatting' (Facebook squatting) has actually turned into quite an annoyance and brings to mind the privacy policy of Facebook and in contract Twitter's new rollout of verified accounts just a few days previous.

Regardless to the obvious hiccups of the situation, Facebook's custom username URL's have been rolled out and you can effectively update yours and view my appropriate pages at the same time, as linked above.

Oh, and the gig went well. BT's new tune "Rose of Jericho" remixed by Sultan and Ned Shepard tore the roof off ;)

Until next time!
