I want to make a running list of 1000 Ridiculously dope songs. Now a Dope song is subjective to the listeners age, ear, rearing, environment etc. Like 1. FUCK THE POLICE by NWA is a Dope ass song especially if you grew up in neighborhoods in the 80's when Police mis handled ghetto youth as a norm of business...so to hear that for the first time was mindblowing. 2. DON'T LET THEM BRING YOU DOWN by Neil Young.. this dude is a bad ass writer. Point Blank and his melodies and groove is simple yet haunting. That's two...

3. IN TIME by Sly and the Family Stone.. I think this dude was soo prolific with his gifts of counterpoint and slick word play and just raw uncut energy..as well as some other uncut substances that he just decided that he had said and played all he could and if we couldn't catch on, there wasn't much left for him to do. He did it... and to boot 4. THANKFUL AND THOUGHTFUL! THat's four dope songs...

Cody ChesnuTT got a few monsters but to me his song 5. MY WOMEN MY GUITARS speaks volumes.

6. EGYTIAN SONG by Rufus feat Chaka Kahn. Just one listen is all it takes.

7. I USED TO LOVE HER by Common (Sense)

8. A CHANGE IS GONNA COME by Sam Cooke. My father and I have listened to Sam for many many years. I'm glad he loved his music and blessed my eardrums with Sam the Man.

IF you have a lil story to tell about a song that moves you, feel free. I'm not gonna rush to get to 1000 songs but I need your help cuz I only know the few thousand songs I've heard. There are millions I bet. Turn me on to some Ipod worthy joints and I'll do the same. I'm a lil bit Hip Hop...I'm a lil bit rock and roll. I bang out when the beat drops and ova dose on Funk Rock Soul.

The original version of 9. OLD FRIENDS FOR SALE by Prince. Not the crap they put on that Warner Release called the Vault..the REAL PRINCE...that boy can write man... I could probably list a thousand of his songs and be done but that one really really moves me..especially if you know some of the back story to it. See, it ain't just about the song..it can be..but if the artist had some ish going on..like I heard Sly was about to go to Jail when he recorded 10. IF YOU WANT ME TO STAY by Sly and The Family Stone - Now listen to the lyrics again and see if it doesn't strike a new chord.

There's my first 10 ..who got next?
☆STARRLITE☆

Well there was so many I had a hard time narrowing the songs down. And I hope you don't I'm a lame for the ones I picked. So here we go..........
1. THE BOTTLE by GIL SCOTT HERON...To be honest, I was never into lyrics. When it came to music it was about the beat, the groove, especially songs that were live, I have an ear for music, I love hearing every live instruments, the slap of the bass, the licks of the guitars, etc...It didn't matter what they were singing or rapping if it sounded good I liked it. Well, I always new about Gil Scott Heron since I was little cause my sisters and my parents liked him. But one day I pulled up his stuff and listened. Man! what the hell was I thinking. Not only the man is a talented poet he was telling the truth. So that opened my ignorant eyes/ears and now I appreciate lyrics. I know I'm only 29 years old, but I missed out on a lot so I have some catching up to do. This man was telling the truth.
2. ADORE by PRINCE
3. LOVE IS GONNA GET YOU by BOOGIE DOWN PRODUCTIONS... This song was right on time when I was growing up, I thought it sent a very true but positive message and it still applies to this day.
4. FIGHT THE POWER by PUBLIC ENEMY
5. THE EX FACTOR by LAURYN HILL
6. DEAR MAMA by TUPAC SHAKUR
7. INNER CITY BLUES(MAKES ME WANNA HOLLA) by MARVIN GAYE
8. SELF DESTRUCTION by STOP THE VIOLENCE MOVEMENT
9. STATE OF MIND by RAUL MIDON
10.JAMMIN by BOB MARLEY

14. BLACK STEEL IN THE HOUR OF CHAOS by Public Enemy

^ I love Zero 7's "Destiny"

Okay, I'm not sure what .'s these are going to be, but...here's 12

-) Robert Randolph - "Ain't Nothing Wrong With That" - The song's intro is awesome, and the drums :-D

-) Coldplay - "Daylight" - This song always puts me in a good mood. Makes me feel like I'm floating, free flying.

-) Santanta - "Adouma" - The perfect let's get it started, shake your body down to the ground song.

-) Santana - "Hold On" - My second Santana addition...I could name a ton more, but the vocals and "guitaring" on this song are on fi'yah!

-) Lenny Kravitz - "Lady" - Whenever I hear it, I fight the urge to dance on the table.

-) Lenny Kravitz - "Believe" - This song is already dope, but when performed live, Lenny and Band kill it. Totally awesome. The drumming rocks on this song. I have tons more from Lenny, but I'm on a budget :-S.

-) Jimi Hendrix - "Hey Joe" - I never heard the original "Hey Joe" done by Tim Rose I think, but Jimi did a hell of a job on this song. I know tons of Hendrix songs, but none move me deeper than "Hey Joe."

-) The O'Jays - "Sunshine" - This song reminds me of the TV show New York Undercover. When Eddie & Nena got married and had their first dance, this song was being performed by Johnny Gill I think...anyways this songs stands in my mind because the next day Eddie was supposed to transfer to another police department I believe, but he got killed. That was a very traumatic episode :-C..."Sunshine" is a love song, but with deeper emotion.

-) Madonna - "Ray of Light" - Just like Coldplay's "Daylight," "Ray of Light" make me wanna fly away. It puts me in a good mood; far away from my problems.

-) Stevie Wonder - "Higher Ground" - Lyrically, this song ROCKS!!!

-) Raheem DeVaughn - "The Love Experience" - Man this guy can sing!!! I'm impatiently waiting for his next album, but every time I play the title track "The Love Experience," I am moved and in a good mood.

-) Martin Luther - "All I Do" - Dope, dope, dope...you go boy!!! Of course I wasn't going to leave you off this list...I can listen to this song on repeat for a long time.

Ooh ooh ooh! I got a little carried away. Hehe...

1. Kiss by Prince - Okay...it's just a childhood favorite. I remember being maybe 8 years-old when I saw Pretty Woman for the first time, and from the moment I heard Julia Roberts singing the song, it's been a favorite of mine.
2. Ooh Baby, Baby by Smokey Robinson...it's just GOOD.
3. & 4. Voyage to Atlantis & Between the Sheets by the Isleys - Damn those Isleys know how to make a slow jam...and "Between the Sheets" is FOREVER a classic!
5. I Wish You Love - Joe Bataan...I love the feel of this song...that and I'm thrilled that there's a Filipino who made an impression on the music scene.
6. Water Runs Dry by Boyz II Men - my favorite song from my all-time favorite album, from my all-time favorite R&B group...thanks to Boyz II Men I fell in love with R&B and all genres connected.
7. Positively Beautiful by Lewis Taylor - England puts out some aweeesome artists! I wish this guy were bigger!
8. Televators by The Mars Volta - this band is just SO different...I'm tellin' you, if you don't know them already, just get yourself their entire discography. They're crazy good!
9. Always and Forever by Heatwave - CLASSIC.
10. I Just Called to Say I Love You by Stevie Wonder...MY SONG when I was a little kid! I remember being a few years old jumping on the bed singing this.
11. The Truth by Anthony Hamilton
12. & 13. 'Til the Cops Come Knocking & Softly Softly by Maxwell - I'm tellin' you...those awesome love songs...and baby making jams...can't get enough!
14. The Way You Love Me by Michael Jackson - Michael's the man! There's no denying his influence in music. This music
15. Be Here by Rahapel Saadiq and D'Angelo
16. For a Lifetime by Teedra Moses
17. The Woman With the Tattooed Hands by Atmosphere...his old stuff is amazing!
18. & 19. Love Song & Hold You by Jean Grae...Jean is the most gifted female rapper I've ever come across!
20. The Panties by Mos Def...totally not what I'd expect from Def! It's so good!
21. Stolen Moments by Alicia Keys...beautiful...beautiful!
22. She Wants to Move (remix) by N.E.R.D. - I need something fun and upbeat in here.
23. Look Whatchu Done to Me and What Kind of Man Would I Be? by Mint Condition - they're to R&B what The Roots are to hip-hop...these guys are great with their instruments.

I'm not trying to butt-kiss or anything...but to go without saying, I'd put your songs on there too..."Daily Bread," "All I Do," "Growing Pains" and this ONE SONG you had on your old Myspace!! It was upbeat and kinda funky...I forgot the name of it! Oh my gosh!

I hope you read this...I just wanna tell you that I am a huge fan! I love your music! I've had The Calling and Rebel Soul for a few years now! I hope you come to Orlando for a show one day; I'd love to see you perform live! Keep doing what your doing, Martin! You're an awesome talent!!

TWIN T TOO more trax to keep this thang alive n kickin:

1 Parliament - Mothership connection LIVE. Glen goins is an unsung hero of that era. Actually nahh Scrap that...he is one of the most underrated singers EVER.He had one of the most soulful voices but he went too soon.

2 Zapp & Roger - Do it roger...funky funky funky

3 Tony toni tone - I already added anniversary..this time ill put something from what is in my opinion their best album House of music. HOLY SMOKES & GEE WHIZZ

4 Tommy Simms - The ballad of sophie. Deep song...but the clincher for me its when the drummer does his thing at the end. His name is chris brown (no..not that CB). Talk about bringing the funk back!

5 Shuggie Otis - Its a cliche among those who know...but this guy was prince before prince was prince. He is just....words cant describe. The song from him i choose is INSPIRATION INFORMATION. Martin (and other rebel souldiers)...im sure u know this guy.....but if not make his cd the next £5 (or whatever amount of dollarz a kompakt disk costs) u spend.

6 slick rick & doug e fresh - la di da di

7 andre 3000 - prototype. I love this guy. Cant think of anyone else who reminds me of funkadelic (baddest band ever) that is getting played on the ray dee oh in this day n age.

8 Curtis mayfield-- superfly. Sheeeet the name sayz it alll!

9 DJ Quik feat james debarge - the divorce song. Along wid Shock G, Quik is one of the flyest producers in rap. He got that talent that alot of people think they have but clearly dont. I chose this song cause...Cuz its my list lol. An i can choose whatever the fuuck i want!

10. Cody ChesnuTT - Some of the riffs and choruses on his album are ridiculously catchy. No..theyre ***RIDICULOUSLY*** catchy. I like the song CANT GET NO BETTER

11. Carlos santana - Maggot Brain LIVE. Find this somewhere on youtube..maggot brain my favourite song ever...and this cover does it justice.

12. Ohio players - sweet sticky thing. Mannn ohio players are them dudes. They just straight crazy. I coulda picked a gazillion songs from them but i chose this one. Dont know why..just first that came to my head i guess.

13. Loose ends - SLOW DOWN. Being from london i gotta include this group.

14. Martin luther - creep. I heard this on youtube...the original was good but this KILLED IT oren ishii <myspace>style</myspace>. Sorry radiohead..

15. Mondo grosso featuring Amel Larrieux - Now You Know better. Epitome of chillout track..

16. Bootsy collins - Munchies for you love. No one but bootsy coulda pulled this shitt off.

17. Eddie hazel - physical love.

18. Living Colour - Cult of Personality... "a language that everyone here can easily understand"

19. Maze - Twilight. I heard this tune on the radio years ago... still cant track it down on cd but i found it on youchoob: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqzYjGfpOh4

20. The meters - cissy strut

21. Mos def - sex love & money. Not many people got this song...which is a shame cuz in reality it is deep.

22. Omar - I could go for the obvious "there's nothing like this" but ill switch it up slightly...ill choose YOUR MESS from his album Sing If You Want It. Omar is another london artist who just proves why we the best in the biz!

Lol people just adding tracks for days. Im sure alot of us wanna see why people think a song iz dope. I thought this would be a great way to learn about different tracks and widen my taste. When people describe a song i already relate to it before even listening to it.
I cant do that if peeps just list their ipod playlist!

A few more ill add:

D'angelo : she's always in my hair When i bought his yoda mix cd this was the first track i listened to. I dont think ive ever done that before on a cd..i usually put it in and let it play but i had 2 hear how he did this track. And i loved it. Dude can cover songs WELL. He updated the rock sound of the song by bringing the guitar riff higher up in the mix. I look forward to hiz new album.

Rahsaan patterson (sugarush beat company) : Oh Lord Take Me Back WOW. WOW. His cd (wines and spirits) got mixed reactions from the public. I didnt like it at first but it grew on me alot. However one track which INSTANTLY stood out was this one. Them rhythm guitars are amazing. He has that old gospel-inspired soul groove figured. I hope Sugarush Beat Company become big. But then again...hot =/= commercial success.
Time will tell

Martin Luther - the calling yea yea..cliched to add a martian luther track on this blog but it had to be done. I loved this track on the album. Had a hip hop feel but unlike me listing a ML song it was not cliched. It had alot of originality in it...both beat and lyrics wise.

The Time - 777 9311 drum pattern. Nuff said.
Surely it wasnt played by a human?

Jimi hendrix (band of gypsys) : machine gun U could list 99% of his catalogue here but i chose this. Its one of my favourite guitar solos in the history. Yikes.

mingus - better git it in ya soul People say he is one of the greatest jazz composers. Probably is. When i heard this album (ah um) for the first time i flipped. Its like everything i had listened to before slotted into place. Everythin made sense. Jimi is the only person that has ever done that for me. Ok maybe Kind Of Blue did as well. But thats it. The opening track BETTA GIT IT IN YA SOUL is the dam near best opening track of any album ever.

wu tang - CREAM how to take a simple 2 bar loop and make it one of the best hip hop tracks the world has ever heard.

Prince - adore. Beautiful song. Not just one of the little man's best songs, but one of THE best songs period. someone on the internet said this song makes u wanna fuck the speakers. Well said my man..

And to keep this list fresh: NERD - You Know What theyre new album is half hot half not. Maybe it will grow on me. But one things for sure is that the track YOU KNOW WHAT falls straight into the hot category.

Ok so thas 9 tracks. Bring some meaning to these dope songs people! Make the rest of us WANNA listen to the tracks.

Not to sure what number I'm at, so I'll start at 11.

11.  Moonshadow/Cat Stevens - Everything on the Teaser & the Firecat album was like a lullaby to me.  Peace Train is another favorite.  The acoustic is infectious.
12.  Comes Love/Billie Holiday - It's Billie...'nuff said!
13.  Acknowledgement/John Coltraine - Love Supreme is a voyage into the mind of a master.
14.  Cholly/Fishbone - Ode to a healthy woman.  Hits close to home...lol.
15.  Superficial/Amp Fiddler - Bluesy, butter-like funk.
16.  Grooveallegiance/Funkadelic - One of George's smoother cuts...but still funky!
17.  Creepin/Steve Wonder - Subliminal seduction.
18.  Family Affair/Sly Stone - Does this man know my family???

I'll be back...

Oh shi...this is fun!  I'm a staunch believer in the music you listen to being a reflection of you.  Keep in mind I am a DEVOUT Funkateer, so much of my list is funk and bass-laced.

1.  Funk Gets Stronger Part 1 - The intro w/Sly & Bootsy is a religious experience for me.  Electric Spankin is one of my fav albums.  I'm butter for Kidd Funkadelic (Michael Hampton) and he's all up in this album.

2.  Freakey Styley/Red Hot Chili Peppers - George produced.  A guitar opera.

3.  Take me to the River/Al Green - Soul stirring.  The one by Talking Heads is good to.

4.  Cult of Personality/Living Color - Vernon Reid's props are long overdue.  Truly a master.  Corey ain't no slouch either.  Both sweet & genuine brotha's.

5.  The Ballad of Dorothy Parker/Prince - Stellar lyrics.  Vocal arrangements sick.

6.  Funkin for Fun/Parliament - Glenn Goins....'nuff said.  Listen & you'll see what I mean

7.  Don't Cry/Seal - Poignant.  Great when u wanna dump ur mental garbage and have a good cry.

8.  I'm a Woman/Rufus featuring Chaka Kahn - Perfect marriage of vocals & instruments.  Lyrics are righteous.

9.  Manteca/Dizzy Gillespie - Epitomizes Afro-Latin Jazz in its purest form.  Be-Bop is my vintage funk.

I'll be back.
