Category: Music

For all the people who have discovered me recently from the "Never Get Ahead" video currently posted on many blogs & You Tube, here's some facts you make be interested in:

1.  The video is from an unrehearsed live appearance on "Chic-a-go-go" in 1997 or 1998 (ten years ago, shit!).  Chic-a-go-go is a brilliant children's dance show on cable access here in Chicago; it's sort of like American Bandstand or Soul Train but for little kids.  Every week there is a random collection of kids and parents dancing to pre-recorded tracks and usually there is a special guest from the independant music scene.  The guest can be local or touring acts, ranging from totally obscure noise bands to bigger acts.  There is no budget and no rehearsal; they usually shoot two or three episodes in about two hours.  The host is a punk rock rat puppet named Ratso and his lovely partner, currently Miss Mia Park.

2.  I was asked to do a tune, and as the song was "Never Get Ahead" I re-cut the vocals to remove references to fellatio.  It is a kid's show, after all.  I recut the tune the night before and really didn't have time to rehearse the lip sync.  I figured my sync would be terrible, but didn't care too much about "fooling" people into thinking it was live.

3.  The original version of the tune is on my album "Bobby Conn" available through Atavistic/Truckstop Records.  I think it is on iTunes, Amazon, etc.  It's my first album; please buy a copy as I haven't seen any royalties from those people for a long time.  There is also a live version on my album "Live Classics, Vol. 1" released on Thrill Jockey Records.  It is considerably more rocking than the original which may or may not be an improvement.

4.  This video clip was voted "Worst Video Ever" in a VH1 contest and has been broadcast in the UK and Europe pretty consistently for the past ten years.

5.  The video was shot at 10 AM on a Saturday morning; I was not "coked out of my brain" as many people have suggested.  If my performance seems exaggerated, well, perhaps you need to enjoy life a bit more.

6.  Micheal Jackson & Motown are a huge inspiration for me, and I'm not embaressed to admit it.  I'm not really ashamed of much, really.

7.  The woman in the blue dress is my friend Emily; you can see clips of her playing bass in another tune on YouTube, "Passover".  The woman in the plaid skirt is Monica BouBou; you can see her in most of my videos as she has played violin with me for over ten years and is my partner in crime.  I can guarantee any dude that is interested in Emily or anyone else in the video that they are not interested a scumbag like you.  Everyone else in the video, all the kids, etc. are just random people who showed up that day.  Obviously, many of them were confused by my antics.

8.  I am "for real."  As in I am a real person.  Is my hair real in the video?  Is that a measure of my integrity?  These are all questions for you think about; but frankly, I am amazed at how much people seem to care about these things.  It's a sign of progress that we have the time to debate such issues over the internet.  I guess that means that the larger issues confronting humanity have been pretty much taken care of.  Hallelujah!

9.  I have noticed that Americans have a harder time with sarcasm & irony that other cultures.  We find sarcasm threatening in some way; I, on the other hand, find the emphasis on the illusion of integrity to be more frightening.  The lyrics to the song both celebrate and mock political songwriting.  The concept of "the man" is a juvenile simplification of oppression.  But the impulse behind it is still valid.

10.  Finally, thanks for watching!  I am very proud of this video, as it captures almost everything I love in entertainment.  It is FUNNY, even ten years later!

Right on Bobby! That was the tune that originally turned us into fans.
You sir, are the balls! Please come to the Boston area again soon!

I would also say that the King For A Day video is also most excellent. If anyone out there hasn't seen that one then youtube it.

Rock on,
WKS

Never, ever, ever explain yourself. You're an original.
Needs so 'splainin'!
"Who Is the Paul" is one of my favourite songs of all time and still gets played from its lovely 45 format I got from you a million years ago when Weasel and I worked at the Dr. Wax. We all thought you were a genius then, and still know you're a genius now.

Everyone that I have showed that video or any other video of yours has asked the same question. Why is this man not famous. Awesome original music and a free spirit is proably why. Vh1 voted this the worst video? The Vh1 of Micheal Bolton and ugh I shouldn't have to mention anyone else. Damn. Love the music and everything else that goes along with it. Thanks you are a definite Fav.

It was the first video I had ever seen by you.

I led me to get 'King For A Day'.

I now also have 'The Homeland' and 'Rise Up!'
I plan to someday have everything you have ever done and patiently await for a live show in my area.

I am fully in love with your style and even though each record has been different from the others I have heard, they all are awesome in their own way.

So I am very happy I stumbled across this video- and it's cool to know the real story.

I also miss bobbyconn. com
Keep doing what you do.

Love,
Toad

Haters be silenced

Although I did always wonder how "I'm a little drunk" was much of an improvement on "I'm so full of junk" for a kids show.

Funny is an understatement, I laugh every time I see that vid. That video is entertaining on so many different levels.

I must be so out of touch with VH1 and its audience, because when i watched the video (voted worst ever) I thought it was the best thing I had ever seen (funny, funky, blissfully innocent.. I think you say 'Sorry' because you accidently say 'head', is that right?), and I subsequently went out and bought everything you ever did, and have been to see you each time you came to England. The show at Stoke a few years ago blew me away and I was staggered at how anyone could be so good playing along to a Minidisc player (there is a picture of me and you after the show in my myspace pictures, it is a treasured moment for me)... your artistry is beyond anything anyone is doing. Last year when you played at The Glee Club in Birmingham with your band, it took it to another level and the rawness and passion of your permformance is breathtaking. I don't make much money from my sales either, but please keep doing what you're doing; you are an inspiration to me and i am sure to many others. Any artist who writes and delivers with your integrity and honesty is priceless in this current climate, where money matters more than merit. Love u Bobby.

Quoth The Raven...Nevermore

The outfit, the dancing, the kids, even the obligatory change in lyrics all combine to make a perfectly grand video.
I smile every time I watch it!!

I have to admit I knew nothing about this "Worst Video Ever" designation. Cripes. You really WILL never get ahead by giving head to "the man," apparently.

I knew about the "Worst Video Ever" thing on VH1 as I saw that when it was broadcast. I couldn't help but think that they'd missed the point a little. I always assumed that the video was meant to be funny.

A true classic. Thanks for letting us know those lovely lovely facts.

I basically ripped this video off when I performed as Bobby Conn for my movement class.

Professor loved it, but some people were just like "dude the music didn't match up to your look at all"

I guess I fail at glam.

after looking through hundreds of youtube comments after you made this post i checked back here to see someone mentioned finding you through ebaumsworld. so i googled that and your name to find the video there, which has over 2500 comments...! a lot of people are confused. and it seems just as many strangers are in defense of it as the ones who hate it.

finally, after a little over 10 years its picking up! hah!

Regarding 9 (the emphasis on the illusion of integrity), here's a quote you might enjoy:

"Disneyland is presented as imaginary in order to make us believe that the rest is real, when in fact all of Los Angeles and the America surrounding it are no longer real, but of the order of the hyperreal and of simulation. It is no longer a question of a false representation of reality (ideology), but of concealing the fact that the real is no longer real, and thus of saving the reality principle.

The damn thing inspired me, and the tune stayed in my head the whole day at work here. The sweat suite and "hair" really made it for me. Personally - This picture here for instance, is me in one of my favorite wigs, hoof boots, and I think I had my "stage teeth" in for that shot. I played in a "cheezy-on-purpose" cover band that did almost every song from that super hits of the 70's commercial - "Billy, Don't Be A Hero, I Woke Up In Love This Morning, 1-2-3 Red Light, Goody Goody Gumdrops, I Think We're Alone Now, etc.." - You get the idea. Yeah - I wore the wig so the kids WOULDN'T leave the bar. It is sad how much image matters, but hey - I can play that game too, man.

My first exposure to the world of Bobby Conn was when my good friend posted your "Without You" video where you wore the Catholic minister's collar and the star bursts come on during the chorus. I thought to myself - This guy - This guy has stolen my act ;) No - It's all good, man. You are definitely a force to be reckoned with artistically. I did Chicago as an artist for a couple years, but being from Iowa, I tended to want to move back home pretty quick. It's cheap living here, and it is home. Great work, man. You have inspired me to keep on my path.

Worst video ever?  Really?  I thought it was fun to watch.  I could think of a ga-zillion other "worst video's ever."  That wasn't even a video..... it was a kid's show.  Too weird.
Regardless of the video quality, the song is pretty damn catchy.  I'm sure the worst video ever "vote" probably got you some new fans.  Great blog.

Voted worst video on VH1??? Maybe that says something about all the other shite that's out there! When I first saw it I wondered whether it was a joke or not and that's what I love about the vid, its 'amateur' feel, something that doesn't take itself too seriously yet with something to say!
When are you coming back to Dublin, Ireland...? The Curly Sacs want to know!
