Current mood:  accomplished

We must be in one of those zombie movies, cause long-dead corpses have started to move around and make noise...

10 years after it was originally recorded, the post mortem release of Da Willys first album "Bad Stretch of Road" is in the works. Afficionados of obscure vinyl may be familiar with the 7 inch EP "A Case of Da Willys" which was released on Baylor Records in 1988 and featured 3 of the tracks from this session ("NY Stomp", "Bad Personality" and "What Dey Say", which can all be heard on Da Willys myspace page). The band photo on the cover of this EP says it all...featuring original bassist Willie Kerr, splayed out on the sidewalk in all his skinny alchoholic splendor, while the other (more concious) band members posed around his passed-out carcass. Produced by Mike "Sharkey" Edison and featuring harmonica by Chandler (Raunch Hands), this twisted classic is just what the doctor ordered. At a time when New York is less recognizable than ever... when the scum, the blood and the fun have been sucked out of NY night life by that corporate ghoul Bloomberg...Da Willys rise from the grave as a testament to what WAS and what CAN BE AGAIN!

UUUNNNNGGHHHUAHHH! BRAINS!!!!

'The combination of Lynne's deep-throat blues-belt and Leon's Thunders-damaged string-throb is a car wreck that sounds like no other. This is growling vom blues on a par with anything Billy Childish dreamed on the wettest night of his life. ' - Byron Coley

Yay!!! Can "Saturday Night Palsy" be far behind?

I also want to add that while Willy constantly passing out on the couch, in the street, occaisionally the gutter itself was very entertaining in some ways, I'm grateful those days are behind him.  It was funny the way he would be dead to rights with his arm sticking up in the air.  Less amusing were times he was out with his head hanging over the edge of a curb, in danger of getting it busted off by someone trying to park a car. Moving a nearly 7ft tall gangly-ass dead weight in those situations was no easy task either and took several volunteers.

on more than one occasion if I remember it, or am I confusing it with when it happened to Leon as well.

Usually he would get up on his own after awhile...

BTW, "Saturday Night Palsy" WAS released, and you can get it if you really want to if you do a search. Although it's out of print there are still copies floating around, probably plenty to satisfy whatever demand there may be. But it wouldn't be worth reissuing as it was not the band at its best, the guitars are very low in the mix as Leon was a right mess at that point.

Maybe a Swamp Goblyns/Kretins split CD though!

I'm fascinated by the back history of Da Willys. A group of people I know are as well. The DW bit on the Scum Rock VHS tape I used to have was oft played, for the music and the ridiculous shit from Leon Ross/Mang's mouth (THAT'S RIGHT!). I love that guy and can't imagine him being dead.

If not an expanded history, please tell some more stories at least.

Thanks for the interest! A true biography, book-length, of DaWillys has to get written. There are so many ridiculous stories swimming together in my mind I can't even think where to start. But there are some things in the works...there's an interview for the website Mr. Skin, which will go into some detailed accounts of DaWillys adventures. I will post a bulletin to let everyone know when the article is up. For now, videos of Leon tell the story better than anything...the youtube link on our profile definately has some good Leon footage, and the video clip of "Oh Willy" (on our Videos page) is also classic, with Leon jumping up on top of his amp with wobbly legs, ripping out a chaotic blues lead...and if you have the dvd of Bad Brains live at CBGB in 1982, look closely - baby Leon is all over that (tho not that easy to recognize with the fresh face and buzz cut).
A handful of our friends who call themselves 'writers' are supposed to be writing a Wikipedia page and a proper bio...but those guys are the laziest bastards I know, way worse than musicians!

Would you be willing to have myself (Frank Morris) and perhaps a cinematographer compile the beginnings of a non-fiction book and perhaps a doc?

I live in Boston now, played the CB's/Arlene/Continental circuit for 4 years in early 00's. My credentials? I'm at UMass Boston for a writing MFA and teaching writing at a technical college in Boston. I know some well-schooled film people, maybe you do to.

We could title chapters/segments around specific dates or places where significant things happened. "Dec. 29, 1986," "80 East 3rd St" or whatever. Does not have to be linear timewise.

Lemme know. I get down to NYC on the regular.

My first intro to you and Willy was at Squid's 16th bday party as A&H's guest - I was still living in Boston then!
