One Arabic country that is not discussed often but should be is Tunisia. In this rather tense political climate, the Arab world has been held hostage by untruthful facts, gross generalizations and ignorance. Nowadays, we seem to look at all Arab countries as Muslim and vice versa.
Tunisia is an interesting country because while of course the first language is Arabic, its culture has evolved from French, Spanish and Italian influences. While Tunisia is one of many peaceful Arabic countries, there are many factors that set it apart from the Arabic World.
First and foremost is the treatment of women; Tunisian men can only take one wife. Women can work freely outside the home, buy property, wear what they want as well as divorce.
Second, while they follow some Muslim traditions, Tunisians are not strict followers. They drink alcohol, they pray when they want and have an open minded attitude towards foreign influences.
Third, Education is for all as well as access to French and English. This is opposed to many Arabic countries where the privilege of education is only for the rich.
While some Arabic people from other countries might even say that Tunisia is not "really" an Arabic country, I say it is an open-minded Arabic country that should be explored, discussed and appreciated for all that it offers.
