I've been reading and enjoying MySpace for so long, I figure it's about time I got my butt in gear and joined myself. So, HELLO MYSPACE! Not that anyone is reading this, but I'm adding my drop into the ocean. What do I do when i'm not on MySpace? I'm the owner of Iberian Press, an indy publisher who's only client is, well, me. I'm the creator of Samurai Elf, a new 7 part graphic novel series. Book 1 called, Set Apart, is currently in comic stores everywhere, at Amazon, and soon at Barnes & Noble (they just made their first order). Samurai Elf hit stores in November '06, so things are moving along nicely. Book 2 will be out Nov. '07, along with another all-ages graphic novel called, Alric the Wild! I'm a sucker for punishment, but my co-writer (Suzy Dias) and I love our little sweat shop and work our asses off to get everything ready.
If you want to check out the book, please feel free. It's http://www.samuraielf.com. There's an e-comic version of both Samurai Elf and Alric the Wild! if you want to check it out. Here's my first review, and thank goodness, it was positive! http://www.brokenfrontier.com/reviews/details.php?id=1061
But that's enough about work. I went to the NY Comic Con last week and it was great. I did a bit of networking, which can be a drag, but luckily I met some cool people including the head of the graphic novel division at Publishers Weekly, Calvin Reid. A very nice man who will hopefully review book 2 when it's back from the printer. I guess I'm still talking about work, but I love all things comics, graphic novels and manga. I can't get enough of it. My personality is perfectly split between my love for writing and drawing, so anything that uses illustrations to tell a good story is something I can't get enough of. I guess that's why I do this. Talking about what I like and what I do for a living is hard for me to separate.
What else can I say that's not too dull? I'm a native of Madrid, Spain. My dad is American and my mom is Spanish (also from Madrid). We moved to Canada when I was a kid and I eventually moved to New York City and set up my small business with my wife, Suzy (also my co-writer). I love it here. Canada was great and my best friend still lives there, but I really feel at home in New York, especially Brooklyn. It's the only place I like as much as Madrid.
I'm also a translator for Heavy Metal Magazine. I got the gig after meeting their VP at the San Diego Comic Con last year (2006). They publish a lot of European stories, many of which come through Spain. All good news for a Spanish to English translator.
That opportunity and seeing how nice they were gave me the courage to apply with my own short story, which was accepted. Life is full of surprises! I've wanted to publish in Heavy Metal since I was a teenager. A real dream come true. The story is called, Bed Bugs, and it'll be in the July issue which will hit shelves in May.
I've also translated a lot of books for NBM Publishing. My favorites were Luis Royo's, Dark Labyrinth and Fantastic Art, as well as Miguelanxo Prado's Daily Delirium.
Thanks for listening! Have a good one,
Miguel
