On Sunday June 14th 2009, Bella Lune opened for Peter Murphy (of Bauhaus). He is one of my musical heroes! It was a fun show to play. We even had friends in from Austin, TX. It was our first time at the Marquee Theatre, which is pretty huge. Since we had four fantastic dancers in nothing but body paint and boy shorts, Peter's crew notified him of the freakshow that was going on. He later said he liked the music, so he came out to check it out. He ended up staying for half of our set! When we were done, I was informed that Peter was watching from side stage. I went over to him and said hello. He immediately complimented the music and stage show and asked us to tour with him up through the east coast!! It was a dream come true!! In fact, someone had told me that it would happen weeks ago. Just like someone told me that we were going to play at the Marquee Theatre weeks before we were asked to play there... We chatted for a few minutes and took a photo with him and the dancers. I asked him if they would play All Night Long, and he said they normally do not do it, but that they might for me.
Good news travels fast! All of our friends in the audience had heard about the tour and were excited for us. I was floating!! Peter Murphy took the stage. He has such a captivating presence and amazing voice! During the encore, the played All Night Long, and Peter pointed at me during the song. :) After the show, we booked the tour with Peter's tour manager. We were to end in DC...
We went back to Peter's hotel at around 12pm, and ended up hanging out until 5am!! He had no entourage, it was just four members of Bella Lune and him. It was like therapy! Every word out of the man's mouth is beautiful. He is so down to earth and sweet. A great host! He told us all about the inception of Bauhaus, their writing process, meeting the other members and his relationship with them, their breakup (which sounded a LOT like why Kal3id is leaving live guitars behind in Bella Lune). We talked about his wife and kids. He is truly in love with his family! He lights up when he talks about them. We talked about him working with Trent Reznor and David Bowie. He told us about the filming of The Hunger and his Maxell tapes ad. I told him he was my David Bowie. He kissed me on the lips! He asked us questions about our writing process and what we do. He spent time with each of us individually talking about our instruments. He told us all about touring and the industry. It was like he was passing the torch in a way and infusing our brains with his infinite wisdom. He was very complimentary about Bella Lune. He said that it was very unique and intriguing. He loved the half naked dancers!! I gave him a copy of Abstracted Visions. When Kal3id got too drunk, he lead him by the hand and took him to pass out on his own bed. How sweet!! It was a phenominal night! We were talking to Peter Murphy all night long as equals. I was not starstruck. It was like he was an old friend.
The next day I called the touring manager to work out logistics. He said that the upper management could not make it work, because they already had local openers planned and failed to communicate that with Peter or the touring manager. We were disappointed, of course, but at the same time very greatful for the time that we got to spend with Peter. The endless night that we will never forget...
Since they were playing in Tucson the next night, Hurley and I decided to drive down there and say our goodbyes. Mark (the guitarist who is originally from Mission UK) put us on the guest list, so we got in free. They played another amazing show. Peter's commentary is hilarious! He let tons of people touch him, and insisted that he is "just a bloke". He is such a humble and amazingly talented human being! They played All Night Long again during the encore and Peter pointed at me for the longest time, and I raised my arms and danced with him from afar. After the show, Mark and the bassist came out to chat with a handfull of people standing by the bus. Peter came out and walked right up to us and hugged us. He said "you two, go on, get on the bus" with his British accent. I felt so special. He followed us on the bus and gave me a drink. We hung out and talked again for a bit and we said our goodbyes. He signed my Bauhaus vinyl on behalf of all of the members!! haha. He said they had been doing eachothers signatures for years. He commented on it being a first pressing on Beggars Banquet. He said I was very smart and pretty. He said that I reminded him a lot of his daughter, who was a "goth". haha! He apologized for our bit of the tour falling through. I got two more kisses on the lips before we left. It was such a surreal experience! Even though we didnt end up on the tour, we did have the time of our lives!!!!!!!
