I disbanded the Matt koon Foundation about 9 months ago, and although we had some measure of success, it was the best thing I ever did.  Every one in the band has moved along their path, and my path the last 9 months has resulted in alot of reflection and a change in my musical as well as my life path.

The Foundation was and is song- oriented instrumental rock, but sometimes it was about other things as well, though i didnt know it at the time, there were alot of unpleasent aspects of it..to be frank, alot of it was me showing off and proving myself..again and again...hardly the highest musical goals...I used the band as a way to showcase my "skills" whether song writing, guitar playing, band leading, booking, marketing, recording, publishing...blah blah blah blah.....

All these years I have worked on my musical skills and I wasted them in the foundation (not to mention wasting the talents of the musicians in the band) because i was using all my skills to show off my skills, instead of using those skills to articulate the world as I see it through music, to express myself through music...that should always be the goal..

I set off on a path of self improvement and spiritual awakening even before the last gig, quitting smoking, making better choices, and have continued  this job full-time seperately from music although it always intertwined...I am definiely not the same person I was 20 years ago, ten years ago, five, even 1..the only constant has been music...

I applied for Victor Wooten's camp in the winter, went in the spruing, and that has parlelled the other changes in my life, I wish everyone to have as fulfilling an experience as I and the other campers had, and vic is something else....like alot of other people, I was attracted to his playing by his technique, only to learn that his technique is the least impressive part of his music....a true master. likewise, when you get to know him as a person, his bass playing is the least impressive thing about him..he is truly a role model for me and for some reason he was thrown in my path, and it has changed my life, my music and my outlook...
more music will happen at some point, I might even bring back the foundation, but a different format..

not too mention, I met my first music teacher, Anthony Wellington, through the camp...I saw him on groove workshop, and in the dvd he mentions he had lessons in the dc area, my wife walked in the room, and I told my wife, see that guy?  I'm gonna take lessons from him...he is the smartest person I have ever known, and every bit as much as a role model as a person as Victor is.. I have taken two lessons from him, and he has made me a better player and teacher...

I am heading back with Anthony to the Woods next weekend, and I cannot wait, the camp has been so important to me, and I cant wait to give back by helping them out that weekend...

Like I said, its a crazy year, I have shaken hands with Vic, Anthony, Steve Bailey, Chuck Rainey, all the wootens, JD BLAIR, Jason Mraz, Dave Weckl, Dennis Chambers, Mike Stern, Bob Franceschinni, Marcus Miller, and Stanley Clarke...and Sam Bush.. If nothing else, it was a thrill to meet them as well as the added blessings of making new friends at camp...
I wrote Vic a short email to thank him for the camp and tell himthat it feels like there have been alot of blessing in my life since camp...he wrote back:

Thank U, Matt!!!
We are always blessed. It is up to us to recognize that.
Nice job.
peace, vic

I think he's right, bout time I opened my eyes..hope all is well with everyone..
Peace and harmony,
