Kirk Lightsey rencontre Freddie Hubbard en 1965 grâce à Art Blakey mais ce n’est qu’entre 1974 et 1975 que débute leur collaboration sur scène avec Essiet Essiet à la contrebasse et Louis Hayes à la batterie.
En 1987, Kirk Lightsey enregistre « Temptation » pour Timeless Records avec Freddie Hubbard pour invité alors qu’un de ses précédents enregistrements « Evreything Happens to Me » avec Chet Baker vient d’être réédité sur CD. Cette réédition offre alors aux mélomanes l’opportunité d’apprécier Kirk avec un introverti tel que Chet Baker et l’exubérant extraverti qu’est Freddie Hubbard.
La collaboration de Kirk Lightsey et Freddie Hubbard se poursuivra sur scène jusqu’à la fin des années 80 au sein du Satchmo Legacy Band avec Curtis Fuller (trombone, vocal), Alvin Batiste (clarinet, vocal), Al Casey (guitar, vocal), Red Callender (bass, tuba, vocal), Alan Dawson (drums, vocal) qui donnera naissance à 2 albums, Salute to Pops, Vol. 1 et 2, parus sur le label Soul Note.

Kirk Lightsey met Freddie Hubbard in 1965 thanks to Art Blakey even though their collaboration on stage begins between 1974 and 1975 with Javon Jackson on saxophone ténor, Essiet Essiet on bass and Louis Hayes on drums.
In 1987, Kirk’s LP « Temptation », featuring Freddie Hubbard is published by Timeless Records while Lightsey's previous recording for Timeless with Chet Baker is transferred to Compact Disc as "Everything Happens to Me". With this release, jazz fans have a fascinating opportunity to compare his sides with the introspective Baker with those featuring exuberantly extraverted performances by Freddie Hubbard.
Kirk and Freddie’s collaboration follows on stage till the end of 80’s in The Satchmo Legacy Band with Curtis Fuller (trombone, vocal), Alvin Batiste (clarinet, vocal), Al Casey (guitar, vocal), Red Callender (bass, tuba, vocal), Alan Dawson (drums, vocal) and released 2 LPs, « Salute to Pops », Vol. 1 & 2, for Soul Note.
