Welcome to

04.06.2009 FEATURE: Veronica Mars: Season 1 by Drew "It’s rare I’ll let the back of a DVD box do my job for me, but this once I’m going to make an exception, because it tells you exactly what you need to know about Veronica Mars: “A little bit Buffy. A little bit Bogart. A dash of Nancy Drew.” That won’t stop me from filling another six paragraphs, of course, but it’s a nice starting point."
04.07.2009 REVIEW: Heather does Chinatown "We watch noir for its manly men and voluptuous femme fatals, the mystery that keeps us guessing, the funny-looking old cars and intriguing characters with cigarettes surgically attached to their mouths. The cars and the smoking were there, but the feel that I love about noir films just wasn’t there."
04.08.2009 REVIEW: Justin does The Naked Gun 33 1/3 "Before the whole “[GENERIC DESCRIPTOR] Movie” fad of the late 90’s and 2000’s tanked into low brow gunk, Naked Gun and Hot Shots were riding out the excellent parody genre in style. It helped greatly that they weren’t just trying to get laughs from an overabundance of fart jokes or bouncing breasts, but that the writers had a spark or two of comedy left in their magic typewriters. It helped even more that Nielsen and Charlie Sheen had the acting chops to pull this stuff off with a mostly-straight face. And can you ever go wrong with a movie where Weird Al Yankovic appears, is mugged and then is replaced by a bumbling detective to do hosting duties the Academy Awards? I think not." 04.08.2009 BLOG: Milestones "Today marks MRFH’s 2200th review! Sooner or later we’re going to have to invest in new tires."04.09.2009 FEATURE: Noir: What is it Good For? by Kyle "Anyway, we all came to an essential observation we all held true: film noir is pretty much inherently goofy. So stylized, so serious, so utterly ridiculous. As much as you would never say as much to the hero of any masterpiece of film noir, lest your nose be broken, from the safety of the cheap seats it’s fair to say that film noir operates on a level that requires you to take it deathly seriously. As soon as you waver, or a girl you are with gets a giggle fit and you find yourself enthusiastically giving in, film noir becomes spoof. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course!"04.10.2009 REVIEW: Al does The Two Jakes"The film had a legendarily horrid eight years of preproduction and the effect of too many fingers in the pie has been smeared all over the finished product. It’s too bad, too, because the film does so much right that it deserves a better place in film history than it got. The angles and the shadows won’t make it into a film class. It doesn’t have the same classic lines or memorably wicked villain. But, The Two Jakes a good little film. Not a Great Film, but a good one. Forget about the rest of that stuff. It’s Chinatown. Well, y’know, almost." 04.10.2009 READER REVIEW: wdm0744 does Rogue"Bottom line: It's still a killer croc movie, but it's the best killer croc movie you'll ever see. Compared to "Lake Placid" this is "Citizen Kane"."
04.11.2009 FEATURE: Death and Mutants: A Bedtime Story by Justin "I drew Francine, the only girlfriend I’d ever had who didn’t kiss and tell. “Bank’s closed, pal.” I didn’t hesitate to let her kiss Carl on the first date either, not when he reached for the hand-cannon strapped underneath one sweaty armpit. He went down like a sack of extremely rotten tomatoes." 04.12.2009 REVIEW: Drew does Miller's Crossing "The Coens do a nice job of adding numerous twists and turns into the story to keep the audience engaged — it’s not a whodunnit mystery, but you definitely will wonder who’s going to discover whose lies and double crosses first." 04.07.2009 MOVIE NEWS: Rorschach to play Freddy; Sam Raimi on Spidey 4; Paul Walker on ::sigh:: The Fast and the Furious 5.
04.11.2009 TRAILERS AND MEDIA: New trailer for Moon; three clips from Star Trek; more Terminator: Salvation images!
