The Farley Mowat - Let the Buyer Beware!

news_090304_1_Farley_MowatWithout being charged, without a trial, without a hearing, without the serving of a summons, our ship the Farley Mowat has been ordered sold by the Government of Canada.

"Am I shocked or surprised?" said Captain Paul Watson. "Not really,
I've smelt the bananas in Canada all my life. My country has freedom of speech until you speak, freedom of expression until you express yourself, and the freedom to hold property until the government takes it from you. Nothing that Canada, where the red of the flag stands for the blood of millions of slaughtered seals surprises me anymore. The fact is that they stole our ship without any charges laid against it or the owners and now they have ordered the sale of our property against our wishes."

The Canadian government seized the ship in international waters in
April 2008 and arrested Captain Alex Cornelissen of the Netherlands and
1st Officer Peter Hammarstedt of Sweden for the "crime" of witnessing
and documenting the killing of a seal under the Canadian Seal
Protection regulations.

The Farley Mowat has been held for over a year although no charges were ever brought against the ship or the owners of the ship - the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

"The Canadian government not only has little respect for the lives of hundreds of thousands of seals, they also seem to have little respect for property and the due process of law," said Captain Paul Watson.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society made demands of the Canadian government that the Farley Mowat be returned in the same condition it was received. They refused and made the decision to sell the ship without even notifying the owner (Sea Shepherd) that the ship would be seized.

"I have no intention of recognizing the validity of any sale ordered by the Canadian government," said Captain Paul Watson. "Whoever buys the ship should be aware that we retain the registry and the original Bill of Sale and we will take back what is ours at the first opportunity. You don't steal a ship from a pirate without
repercussions."

Any potential buyer should also be aware that the ship has over a quarter of a million dollars in leans against it. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society will notify the creditors to be alert to any persons claiming ownership of our property. The buyer should be aware that debts on ships under maritime law stay with the ship regardless of change of ownership.

The Canadian government is taking bids on our ship until April 12th.

Captain Watson's message to any potential buyer of the Farley Mowat: "You will not be buying a ship, you'll be buying a debt worth more than the ship is worth and you will be buying something that will not be your property - ever!"

Bravo Captain, I cannot understand why this government wants to bring further shame on itself, unless, of course, it is because they have been shameful for so long that they forget what it is? I know that I am ashamed of them. They had no right to take her and certainly no right to keep her and since they did both than they should have to comply with the terms that you gave them so long ago. I for one would rather see my tax dollars go towards returning her to her rightful owner than I would see my tax dollars go towards maintaining an outdated seal hunt that costs way to much, and on that note I am not just talking about money. I know there is not much time left, but if there is anything else we can do to help get her back, than I would love to be of service. Be Safe-Be Strong-Be Diligent

Anthony, I hope that by "those Canadians" you mean those mindless government officials who rarely do what the majority of the people (who voted them in) want. Or by "those Canadians" you mean the ones who shamelessly bash the brains out of helpless creatures. You know, just because Japan murders countless Whales does not mean that every person there is bad. I guess that I am just not that prejudiced. Here's a little ditty my Grandmother taught me--"I pointed a finger at one of my friends, for his faults I could plainly see, But then when I looked at my hand, I WAS SHOCKED. There was three fingers pointing at me." I may not be able to change your mind on this but rest assured. I wish you did not hate me because I was Canadian but I will lose little sleep over it this evening, because I know in my heart what is right. And selling off the Farley is WRONG. And clubbing baby Seals is WRONG. And I am proud to be Canadian, I am just not proud of ALL Canadians. I'm sure that you can understand my point of view. I sure don't hate ALL Americans. nighty night

I am Canadian and I can't blame you Anthony. I hate our militant government. There really is some dirty business going on in our supposedly peaceful loving nation and I think more awareness in Canada is needed. People are generally sleepy, over polite and lacking in the will to make radical changes. Hence the few that do stand up and make a lot of noise such as the sealers and the oppressive Government who do not as almahome accurately says listen to what the general public wants get to run the Country. The Government is run by sealers who cater to the East Coast. It is disturbing and something that most Canadians are utterly unaware of. Most people still don't know we have a seal hunt in Canada!

Speaking of Piracy:........Piracy is as old as sailing itself. Some of the earliest pirates were the Phoenicians who plied the Mediterranean around 2000 BC. Around 150 BC the Cilician pirates from Turkey took control of the Mediterranean until 67 BC when Rome wiped them out. // ........Pirates appeared in great number on the Mediterranean again during the Middle Ages. While on land, crusades were conducted by Christian Europeans to get control of the "Holy Land" of the Middle East, held by Muslims, pirates, known as Corsairs conducted similar battles on the Sea. // ........The Golden Age of Piracy started soon after the discovery of the New World and lasted about 250 years. In 1494 the Pope divided the New World between Spain and Portugal. Predictably this did not sit well with the other European nations. Before long, English, French and Dutch ships began attacking Spanish and Portuguese ships for the gold stolen from the Aztecs, and for the ships themselves. //........Thus, in human history, England, France and the Netherlands were in fact pirate NATIONS. //........Now, in the 21st Century, Canada seized an unarmed non-Canadian ship in international waters, citing a Canadian law called the Seal Protection Act - a sham of a law to protect not seals, but the sealing industry. //........In doing so, historians take note, Canada has joined the rank of Pirate Nations. This will stay in history till the end of time. //........I AM CANADIAN. BOYCOTT MY COUNTRY!

that sounds illegal to me.. they just want to get the ship off thier hands proabbly because they know you would win in a court case... most canadians are all right folks anthony. it is just the inbred northerners that think clubbing baby seals is their patriotic duty and the people in the canadian coast guard who think defending those retarded sadists as their patriotic duty... to captain Paul good luck in getting your ship back.

I have no beef with any person from any nation. BUT.....this nonsense with Canada is getting out of hand.....who the hell do they think they are?? Come on, this isn't the dark ages where you could do what you liked with some-one elses property. Or maybe the Canadians ARE living in the dark ages....I mean, who else commits such attrocities and thinks it's OK!!???? I hate to be so blunt....but at the end of the day all they are is murdering, cowardly bastards. ....Rock on Captain.......Let the world know the Farley Mowat is the property of SSCS and will remain so!!!!....xxxxxx

They keep proving to the world how vile and despicable they are. Is there not anyone who can take them to task for their illegal seizure and now trying to sell stolen property? I hope there is some remedy for this. No trial, no hearing, no summons, that is blatantly wrong. They say what goes around comes around. I hope they get theirs real soon.

It's unfair to judge all Canadians by the select group that feed this negative opinion. ....And it isn't a matter of not having the guts or balls to stand up to the government, it is the oh so internationally common occurrence of the government ignoring the opinion of a vast number of people.........If you feel all Canadians are terrorists, then I'm afraid to learn what you think of the real ones, who blow themselves and innocent people up. ........Just, watch your wording with your comments I suppose. They can cause great offense and show ignorance in some respects.

This is how the 'Crooked Crown' of Brittania built their empire, a family tradition inherited by Uncle Sam and every other psychopathic entity known as a 'Nation/State'. Deny their 'sovereignty' i do, and charge them with 'omnicide' the extermination of human cultures and entire species. Likewise i so charge the psychopathic entities known as Corporations whose 'fudiciary responsibility establishes them as servants of the ancient god called Mammon. They are illusory entities and i hold their 'leaders' and individual 'pillars of society' personally and individually responsible. What are the names of the 'public servants' who signed off on these decisions? They are to be held personally and individually accountable for their decisions and actions. Only thus will it stop. Cheers

I don't have the understanding of the law, can't the Canadian govt. be taken to international court ,the Hague I believe is the place?....Or can the SSCS sue the govt. in Canada? Perhaps there are some lawyers who would take up this worthy cause for free.
