You've seen them on the streets. They cut across class, color and culture. They offend by their very existence, yet they are not shot on sight. With rock salt…right square in the ass. I'm talking about all these "individualists" who are walking around with their pants bagging down to the point that the upper ....half to two thirds of their underwear (or sometimes, naked butt) is showing.

Well, vengeance has finally arrived in some states and will hopefully go nationwide before too much longer. In ........Louisiana, it is now a crime, punishable by a 500 dollar fine and up to 6 months in jail for "exposing underwear in public". And no, that's not being applied to plumbers, electricians or guys who at 40 still think they can squeeze into the same pants they could at 18. Of course, this is causing all sorts of strife in ........Louisiana. Cities in other states have passed similar ordinances, but LA is the only state that has attached actual jail time to the law.

Of course, the ACLU hysterics are already trying to make this a "race issue" because they claim it's "...mainly black men who wear their pants like that. This is a form of Racial Profiling!" Ummm...NO. I live in Phoenix and we have white guys, Latino guys and even a few oriental guys walking around with their pants looking like they're 3 sizes too big and have rocks in the pockets. I don't know where these ACLU nuts are but they obviously need their vision checked!

Or....maybe they're saying that all guys who wear their pants like that, "look alike"? Hmmmmm....

All I can say about this law is that if they're gonna go after Mr. Baggy Pants then they also need to go after Madam Spandex El Grande as well, okay? I mean fair's fair. It is my firm belief that after a certain weight or age or both is reached, Spandex no longer exists as a "Right". It becomes a "Privilege". Some of you have read my encounter with the 400 pound woman who was wearing shocking pink Spandex running shorts, so you know what I'm sayin' here. I think even those of you who HAVEN'T seen that blog can still relate. (I still get Full Body Shudders when that image flashes through my mind....Brrrrrrr!!!)

Atlanta
got the ball rolling and now cities in other states are following suit. One school official in one city was quoted as saying that they, "...HAD to get this under control before the elementary kids start doing it..." Here's a thought for this "School Official"...make sure Junior's folks are buying him jeans that FIT.
And how about throwing a belt or some suspenders in there to complete the ensemble?
Bottom line (no pun intended) is that parents need to step up to the plate and be more aware of how their kids are looking...and how that "look" is being viewed by the General Public.
Now get out there and get those pants pulled up!

I respectfully disagree with you Johnny.  There's only so much a government should tell a person what to do.  Showing underwear is not obscene.  Some people like the look, some may not like the look and some just don't care.  Bad taste is not a crime and who could be the judge of that?

Well it is considered lewd and indecent Pam, because there are people out there who find it offensive for people to wear their clothes like that, especially around children. Yes wearing your clothing however is a way of freedom to expression but there is and should be guidelines when in a public venue. That would be like me saying I could wear Chaps with no ass in it because it is my freedom to express who I am with wearing them. Granted I would never do that, but that is an example. Same concept, I dont want to see peoples asses because they cant keep their pants up.

It would be lewd and indecent if you wore your chaps with no ass in them if you didn't have underwear on.  It may be in bad taste to wear them even if you had underwear on, but your butt would be covered, therefore it wouldn't be indecent in the eyes of the law.  If that were the case, you wouldn't be able to wear a bathing suit in public without being considered indecent.  So where do you draw the line?  Let's face it, if looking at a young persons cotton covered ass cheeks over the top of a waistband once or twice a day is the worst thing I have to deal with, then I'd consider myself lucky.

I can totally understand how people can be offended by this trend, but government intervention?  No way...we have more important things to spend tax dollars on than someones bad sense of style. And really...do you want a bunch of old men politicians in suits telling you how to dress?

I think the fact that its just out of hand is some places and people do write to their government to suggest these laws, its not that they just go...well we will just make a law. Its a law because enough people complained about it or signed a petition to have it enforced. Now I dont think I have seen a single person here with pants that shown their underwear or ass, but if I did, to me thats still lewd because...underwear goes inside the pants. Maybe you are okay with it, thats fine its opinion. Still the fact is enough people find it indecent exposure and lewd enough to make it laws. As rediculous as that is, to mojority obviously the laws seemed to be the right decision. From what I hear US schools are having bans on the same thing, so its wide spread that they want the issue taken care of.

Uwe, you hit the nail on the head! :) I don't mind folks disagreeing with me but you're right. Wearing your pants to where they look like they're about to fall off (and WILL, given the proper circumstances) in public is NOT a matter of "personal expression". Your example of the chaps with no ass is a prime example of this. If a person wants to waer them that way indoors, out of sight and with others who dress that way, fine. Knock yourself out. But when you're out in a public venue where there are kids and old ladies...hike them bad boys UP! LOL

I think those are the same ones who have big holes in their ears and hardware inserted.
Can you write one about muffin-tops too?

If all of us old folks could stand to wear our pants that way, the trend would die a quick death. But until then...

Johnny, I will have to agree with PAM. I in no way condone or enjoy looking at a silly trend that alot of young men and some women have chosen to think makes them look good or cool or whatever. I will stand toe to toe to defend their right to wear their pants that way. I for one am sick and tired of letting the government try to tell me what to wear, what I can do on my property, and when and where I can smoke (If I decided to start smoking cigarettes in earnest again). Do I think it is attractive? NO!! Now don't get me wrong I think the curves of a woman's Profile (pc terms) is a sight to admire and appreciate, but I don't need to see her thong to know where leads. ;-) All that aside I wonder if the youth of today know where this trend started and what it signifies? I wonder if they would continue it if they knew? One last point I have talked to a few police officers and they like this trend, their point was have you ever seen someone try to run with their pants drifting south. They have to walk with their legs spread apart to keep them in place and then try to duplicate this while trying to run or risk tripping and crashing to the pavement. BAD BOYS, BAD BOYS, WHAT YA GONNA DO?       I'm just sayin'

I think people should be able to wear what they want, until their nether regions start coming out to stare me or my kids in the face.

And Oh. My. God, do they ever look stupid.  Even when they're not flashing ass, I think to myself " IT IS CALLED ****** UNDER****** WEAR FOR A REASON.  YOU WEAR IT ***** UNDER****** YOUR CLOTHES, DUMB ASS!

Okay, I'm done now!  :)  And LOL!  Good blog!

From what I remember the trend of sagging pants was first seen in prisons, to signal to other prisoners that they were willing to engage in homosexual activities. How this became a trend in a country that is so anti gay...who knows.

If I ever catch my son wearing his pant like that (he is 4, now)  he will be using his ears as suspenders the next time he goes out in public!  No Sir, I am NOT putting up with that BS!
