9 Ways on How To Be a Friend to a Victim of Dating Violence
-Most teens talk to other teens about their problems. If a friend tells you things that sound like his or her relationship is abusive, here are some suggestions on ways to help.
-Don't ignore signs of abuse. Talk to your friend.
-Express your concerns. Tell your friend you're worried, their not at fault for the abuse and there is help for them.
-It may be very hard for you to hear your friend's story. You may feel helpless and that they are not listening to you but the best thing you can do is to be supportive, empowering, and non-judgmental. Remember they are already being controlled by their partner and do not want to be controlled by their trusted friend.
-Help your friend see his or her strength's. Many people in abusive relationships are no longer capable of seeing their own abilities and gifts.
-Call the police if you witness an assault. If you do not witness the abuse but know that it is happening to your friend talk with a trusted adult.
-Encourage your friend to confide in a trusted adult or with someone who can help him or her stay safe.
-Find out what laws and resources are in your community so that you may help your friend stay safe from the abuser.
-Your personal safety is very important. Try not to put yourself in a dangerous situation in where you can be harmed.
