Wonder what kinds of music you're in store for at the upcoming CastleTone event? Here are the reviews for the participating bands:
Heroes and Villains
Has there ever been a better time for indie pop? Sufjan Stevens is being hailed as the songwriter of his generation. Belle and Sebastian have evolved into indie rock elder statesman. Even obscure bands like The Boy Least Likely To have gained audience in America. It seems that a new band is being shouted out on The O.C. every week.
Perhaps we will see the day when Seth Cohen is touting the rabid experimentalism and fine song writing talents of Staten Island's Heroes and Villains. But then that may be unlikely as Seth Cohen given the opportunity to observe the sounds and sites of Heroes and Villains would likely shit himself and not soon go out in public unattended.
H&V (as they're known in tha' street) throw down the gauntlet. They walk the tight rope between well crafted songs and jarring sounds in a way most bands couldn't bother to wrap their single minded heads around. In many ways H&V are distinctly Staten Island, or more accurately distinctly Shaolin. They wrap their songs in the nourish tones and experimentalism that the Wu Tang Clan wrapped their erm… raps in. But don't worry whitey, Heroes and Villains aren't bustin' caps or rhymes just some of the finer indie rock this here hunk of land has to offer.
Paragraph play the sort of mopey mid tempo experimental guitar rock that makes Cure and Radiohead fans grin ear to ear. That’s bullshit Cure and Radiohead fans never grin ear to ear, about anything. If they did though this band could make it happen. Don’t confuse the issue while Paragraph’s sound is beholden to these forebears it’s not some reductionist mess like Travis or a million and one sad college rock bands. They feel like the real deal. The music behooves depth and layers that evolve and emerge with subsequent listens.
Leave your moshing boots at home and put down the devil horns. This band is going to invite you in for some sweet melodies on a bed of experimental rock.
