Way back in 2007 Rob Zombie released The remake of John Carpenter's classic "Halloween".
Carpenter's 1977 original set the gauge for Horror movies to follow.
JC created a monumental film in that it provided a different angle on the Horror film but at the same time kept all the classic elements of the Horror film intact;from the eerie soundtrack to the iconic role of "The Shape".
Michael Myer's easily fit into the classic monster category and with over 30 years and a dozen sequels, action figures, comics and other merch, his presence has become a household name.
Then Rob Zombie came along.
The man who stated he would never do a remake, was helming the new Halloween remake, calling it a reimagining and stating it would include a backstory; The orgin of Michael Myers.
At the time I thought this might be good because here's a Horrorwriter,Horrordirector,Horror expert, who already produced two decent, fairly original Horror movies and a coupla decades of cool Horror Rock and stated he'd never do a Horror remake is....well...doing a Horror remake....
So if that's the case then it's probably gonna be a damn good remake and the backstory will be a story that Rob NEEEDS to tell.
Because after all, he's da man when it comes to the Horror Film!.
Well,I was dissapointed, angry and insulted, when the movie was finaly released!!
His backstory was lame and one dimensional and not at all what I envisioned as The Orgin!
In fact I left him a comment on his myspace, detailing how I would have done the orgin!!!...but I was soon deleted from his friends list. read my blog"Why Rob Zombie deleted me from his friends list or how I would of wrote the Halloween Backstory" -August 14 2008...heres the link
http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=16730312&blogId=424099205I lost alot of faith in Rob after that.
I began to see that he was just like all the rest of the Hollywood BS, not very original, not really true to his horror roots, a bit of a hack.
But in The Horror genre one can get away with being a hack BUT.....
RZ disrespected a Horror icon, Michael Myers, by making The MichaelChild, too real, too human, too smalll, too cute, just too unbelievable that this Disneykid was gonna be the gigantic, the ominous and ruthless"The Shape".
I was not alone in my loathing of RZs Halloween as my sentiments were echoed by RZ fans and Horror Fans and especially Halloween fans alike.
"The movie sucked!"
I mean, for me it was the backstory that sucked, not the whole movie.
The second half, after he escapes the ward and the movie begins as a remake...well I can handle that part.
It's just that his backstory doesn't jive with the second half.
When hes grown to 7 ft and is mute, it just doesnt work with the vibe of the backstory.
So when I heard Zombie was making a part 2, a remake kinda, of The original sequel but, again done Zombie's own way, I was, to say the least,!!!PISSED!!!
I thought he'd quietly go away, back to zombieland ,after injecting too much of his "white trash family" theme into Halloween, a very selfish move on his part and, after the public pissing he took for fuckin up JC's HorrorOpus, he wouldn't touch anything that said "Halloween"on it again!!!
So that's what made me madd as hell, because he snubbed us all and took on ANOTHER REMAKE!! and would continue to trash the good name of Michael Myers.
And the months past and I began to see stills from the movie, then previews and trailers;scenes showing Michael with a partialy exposed face, showing,!gasp! a bearded man and then a shot of him in a !gasp !hoody!!?
...now Zombie's really fuckin wit Mikey!!
and whats this?
Michael's mother back from the dead??
"KILL HER BABEEEE!!!"
LOLOLOLOL!!! I fuckin howled at that part!!!
Zombie's completely lost his fuckin mind!!!
The month's past and the day finally came and I checked the net for reviews.
Just as I thought;scathing reviews. A coupla good ones but in general a big thumbs down for Zombie's H2.
So all of the sudden I felt sorry for Ol Zombie...
The reviews ripped the movie to shreads and I couldn't believe it could be that baaaad!
So I did what I said I would never do again and I went and saw a Rob Zombie movie in a Theatre!!
..instead of getting a burnt copy from a buddy and watching it at home, hehe.
Well, I was impressed, shocked and entertained when I seen it the other night on the big screen!!
Rob Zombie came through with a great Horror movie.
He collected and arranged some classic elements of the horror film and placed them into his vision, albeit not always coherantly but never the less, boldly and enthusiasticaly.
I seen elements of Carrie,Texas Chainsaw Massacre,The Shining and those 70s Horrors, even paying homage to the Black and White 30s and 40s classics like Bride of Frankenstein and Ghost of Frankenstein..."Are you a Giant?"
I admit I laughed out loud in a crowded theatre when Michael Myer's mom appears for the first time on a white horse dressed in a white gown.
I said I wasn't going to laugh...but I did and it was the only laugh in this quiet theatre.
I was glared at by some theatre partons but I wrote it off as freedom of speech...or expression.
Hey, if Zombie could do it so could I.
After a while the Mommy/dream scenes acted as brief escapes from the realistic and brutal carnage that dominated the screen.
They were like psychedelic,creepy trips.
Visualy intoxicating, like walking through a spookhaus or a sick version of Disney's Haunted Mansion on acid, ecstacy and a few bongblasts of good BC Bud.
The opening number in the hospital, as it unfolds, conveys this surreal creepyness; cold isolation and dream like quality with the use of a heavy rain storm, the empty, old hospital and, most of all, the vintage music video of The Moody Blues"Knights in White Satin" that pops up on tv playing over and over on different sets in several scenes.
There are other memorable dream scenes like the German impressionist inspired "Dinner table scene"
...and some more memorable musical moments like when the coroners' van hits a cow in the middle of the road, which sends them through the windsheild and awakens their stiff, Michael Myers.
During this scene 10ccs, "Things you do for love" is playing on the car stereo... I never thought such a gay song could be soooo creepy coool!!
Both songs and their accompanying scenes were playing over in my head for a few days to follow and I must say I've finally shook em.
Fuckin with my head eh?....Good job Zombie.
While on the subject of music:
NO!! the Halloween theme did not appear once..
well, not until the end and in its place most of the film, a creepy piano motif that would appear through out...not as classic but creepily effective.
The Halloween party scene created a bit of campyness to this film, giving it a Drive- in feel and the make out scene that follows, equally so.
But the camp ends there and in most of the film, we are given an unedited display of Michael Myers brute force and killing capabilities.
Rob has the ultimate killing machine at his disposal to do all his sickk & twisted bidding and he makes very good use of this Horror icon's many talents.
through head stomps to face plants in glass to?? some mamings I honestly couldn't figure out and had to turn my head sideways to get bettter perspective.....??
AND RZ went and really fucked with Michael this time out BUT....
So what if ya can see part of Michael's face as his mask begins to detoriate after a year or so of wear and tear..??
So what if he opts for a hoody instead of his trademark Maintenance suit??
So what if he grunts when he kills??
So what if he uses other means of killing than with his knife?
This is a new,grittier,brutaler..updated version.
Zombie takes on Michael like The Frankenstein Monster.
Just look at how many times Ol Franky has been incarnated since his inception into film in 1910, to his iconic rise to stardom with Boris Karloff in the 30s and beyond to this day.
The Frankenstein Monster was portrayed with the same squarehead and bolts and boots and big black sports suit for decades because, well, that's how he looked. Then people started fuckin with him, updating him and reimagining him.
That's what Zombie has done and this time around, in his second Halloween effort, he succeeds in bringing The Myers creature to another level.
He basicaly saved Michael from being a horrendous cheeseable laughable out of date Horror icon without a future.
Now Michael's bigger better faster, meaner;Streamlined for the new Millenium.
But Rob Zombie has made one noticable departure in this film.
If you look at his films to date, they have a theme going on.
The most noticeable theme in the 4 films he's made thus far is "Family" and disfunctional family at that.
The Myers family didn't differ too much from the Firefly family.
Both family's were white trash, both had killer instincts and both included Sheri Moon Zombie
But the 3 previous films had murder sequences and kills that focused on Cops, the upper middle class spoiled richkids and their materialistic parents etc as the victims.
This time around we get, strippers, rednecks, wanna be tough guys and sluts to die.
It almost shows Zombie's rise in "Class".
His climb to "stature."
He started out with a disdain for the upperclass to now being fully part of it.
Afterall, he's making movies for The Weinsteins of Hollywood.
Maybe Rob Zombie's doing The Weinstein's evil bidding this time out by killing the "undesirables" and the trash of society and telling the people watching these scenes that
"Yes,You feel good when these dirty nasty ugly people are dead don't you!!".
Possibly fufilling somebody's hidden agenda or perhaps his own.
Makes me wonder if he's part of The NWO master plan...hmmmm..
He's a long haired hippy that some say has "SOLD OUT".
A big bussiness man disguised as an artist and his business is seeping noticably into his movies, music and art....
So he kills,or should I say gets Michael to kill Zombie's "people";The stripper, The strip club owner, the longhaired bearded bikers and all the other white trashers that Zombie embraces... now deserve to diiiie!!
Shit ,he even kills himself, in the form of Dr.Loomis,(the compassionate in the first to turned sleazebag doc in the second)who "sells drivel to the masses", by sacrificing the heartless Loomis character to the Michael God!
But the movie is dirty and the characters are all greasy and unattractive with scars and they all swear alot and the movie has a grainy quality to it so I think Zombie is still in touch with his trash or his observation that the average human being ain't all that fuckin perfect.
We swear when we get angry, we even have those "FUCKINFUCK"tempertantrums when we're alone and no one's watching... no matter how 'perfect' we think we are.
The acting and peppered dialogue therefor comes across as genuine and that's a bonus and a damn good thing for any Horror movie.
So in conclusion I will say that I apologize to Mr.Zombie for writing him off so harshly for taking on H2.
He proved me wrong and he managed to make a very good Horror movie out of it.
I will however,NOT apologize for my feelings on his effort on the first Halloween installment and the second installment didn't help me realize the first any better.
The backstory still sucked and will always suck and he brought it to H2 to no real avail.
It just added some trippy stylistic scenes is all.
So if I ever get the money$$$ I will make my own version of Halloween and include The SpookhauS version of the backstory!!
!!!FLASH!!! THIS JUST IN!!
!!!ROB ZOMBIE SET TO DO REMAKE OF THE BLOB!!
UH oh here we go again!
KreeepOn
