I apologize up front for this being so long.. Please.. Take your time! haha!
I announced earlier this week, that I have decided to cancel all of my shows for the remainder of the year.
I feel that I at least owe it to you, the people that have come out to
support me at one time or another throughout the last 19 years, to make
sure everyone understands why I have come to this decision.
I've had the opportunity to work with some of the biggest names in
country and southern rock in just this past year. From future
superstars like Colt Ford, that I did three shows with, to the absolute
legendary David Allan Coe. I've opened for the Marshall Tucker Band at
the Darlington Raceway, played with Brantley Gilbert, Rhett Akins, and
Lee Brice. And even had my name on the same show card with people like
Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hank Williams Jr, Sugarland, Gretchen Wilson, and more.
Though all of these things were some of the highlights of my nearly 20
years playing music in the clubs in and around SC and NC, I've been on
the verge of burning out for the last few months, and have been getting
close to being ready to hang it up for a while. Then after a few days
to really sit down and think about it, and think about how much time I
was MISSING at home with my wife and kids, and how my shows were
getting in the way of other little things I wanted to do, I just looked
at the calendar and decided that I shouldn't drag it out any longer,
and decided to make the difficult phone calls and emails to the clubs I
had already scheduled, and to those that were waiting on confirmations,
and break the news to them, and cancel their dates.
So I hope that you'll all support my decision, just as much as you
supported me on the stage. I also hope that you'll help me stop the
spread of false rumors that are sure to go around. I've had my share,
that's for sure! But it would be very helpful for me and my family, if
everyone knew that my decision to quit, was MINE, for no other reason,
than that I wanted to spend more time with my family and friends, and
more time to spontaneously make plans on the weekends, and to also be
able to say that I felt like I went out while I was on top.
I've had some of the best times of my life performing for you all, and
have been humbled like you wouldn't believe, at the support and
appreciation, and by the number of dedicated followers that I've
accumulated, mostly just in THIS past year!
SO. That being said, we have just ONE more show left! Actually, I guess
it's sort of TWO. Just on the same day, in the same venue.
On July 11th, JR's Lounge in Hartsville, SC will be holding a Poker Run
to benefit a local cancer patient. The significance here, is that the
one being honored, is my step-mother, Donna Davis. She and my dad are
going through a really tough time right now, and I hope that any local
bikers that may be reading this, will come out and show your support if
you can. Cancer never JUST affects the ones that have it, it affects
everyone they love and everyone that loves them. And obviously,
financially, it's even harder, because the patient is out of work, and
other people have to take time off as well, to help when and where they
need it. And the treatments are not cheap.
So anyway, I was asked months ago to perform at this Poker Run, when
the bikes started to make their way back to JR's, which means I will be
starting up around 6 or 7pm.
I will post a separate *OFFICIAL* bulletin about the Poker Run shortly.
At around 9pm, the club will take over. Anyone that wasn't in the Poker
Run, will have to pay a $5 cover charge, and all sales will go to the
money raised for Donna during the day.
This is where and when I will 'officially' start my very last show.
I'll be recording audio and video (like I do at almost ALL of my shows
anyway!), and hope that you'll join us that afternoon AND that night.
Thank you all SO much for your support ever since I started in 1990.
Seeing the same faces come to every show they could, hearing your
compliments and reviews, having you ask for autographs (which was
always really weird for me) and asking for pictures with me, and just
being there and enjoying yourselves and my show, means so much to me,
and has meant so much to me. I played for the smiles and laughs and
applause, not the money. Thank you all for what you've given ME!
So there you have it, in a very short message! I hope that this has
cleared up all of the questions I've gotten in the last few days here.
Official flyers and information for both the Poker Run For Cancer show, and the final show that night, will be posted soon.
Thank you all again, and I hope to see you on July 11th!
