two important musical developments
Flying Lotus's Los angeles, this album capatalizes off the Madlib/Jay-Dee style idiom, off kilter beats with sparse bass and infinite textural interaction & ingenuity. well done. the grooves are spelled out in a certain way. it is imitation, for sure. but pleasant mastery of a number of great styles and techniques of modern instrumental hip hop.
Of Montreal's Skeletal Lamping - a great record, and something i havent' known Of Montreal for; an entire record worth listening to. their last album sputtered out directly after the first half.
this one, kevin has made a coherent and meaningful opus. which explains why none of the songs take a familiar approach. nor do they lack the juciest, most saturated bits of Pop Heaven. were talking about the musician who changed the history of television commercial advertising jingles in one FELL SWOOP.
no the songs are all as interconnected and varied compared to his previous work as picasso's first foray into cubism was to his ROSE period. segueways are just as important as bridge sections of songs. not to mention that a recurring device in his song writing process involves drastic tempo shifts. (not album writing process. infact, the album seems to travel along one track, as one long song, tempo uniform and determined by the milky cosmos)
i believe this music has done away with many useless, outdated conventions of pop music form, such as repetition/expectation and embossment of sections for contrast. instead (and if you own a good stereo system, i suggest you buy this little hovering masterpiece of a cd) he sprawls in whatever direction he feels necessary in the transcription of his heart. one truly gets the impression, towards the end of a song that began with an unseizable, infectious, saturated soaring sing-song chorus, soaring, practically out of the picture, of hovering over that melody once again. it is implied, by a token of a luxurious, fabulous brilliance.
try to hum
"I WANT YOU TO BE...
MY PLEASURE PUSS!
I WANNA KNOW WHAT ITS LIKE TO BE INSIDE YOU!
I WANT YOU TO BE...
MY PLEASURE PUSS!
I WANNA KNOW HOW IT FEE-EEELS "
no sing it you bastard!!!!
