Dear Companions
It is getting close to All Hallow E''en, when the Danes light bonfires to send the witches back to Germany. Or so I was told by a Dane some years ago. In celebration of playing with Todd Phillips, we are re-running last year's Halloween newsletter photo, taken by Anne Hamersky. We're looking forward to the great pleasure of playing music with Todd, who has been on tour with Joan Baez for much of this year.
I am feeling ever so much lighter with the imminent release of my solo recording, Blossoms, (Spruce and Maple Music, SMM 2005). This is a collection of songs that I have started working on, in some cases, 8 years ago. Now, I am ecstatic to announce, the songs are ready to go out into the world. I am very attached to this collection, and maybe that's why I have had a hard time pushing these kids out the door. Like holding onto the youngest child. We will be offering the CD's and downloads for sale exclusively through my website prior to the official release date of February 16, 2010. If you're in the neighborhood, come celebrate with us at the Freight and Salvage's gorgeous new digs here in Berkeley!

The wonderful Kitka Women's Vocal Ensemble will be singing before the 9:00 PM showing. If you like dogs, you'll love this movie, witch is equal parts educational, funny, deep, and silly.

Blossoms
The new recording will be in our hands by November 18, or so we're told. Keep an eye on our website for the news. We'll be posting downloads, and offering it for sale exclusively through the website and at the Freight and Salvage concert on Nov. 28, before it is officially released in mid-February.
The CD features 14 songs, most of which were written by me. But there are some gems included, by Kate Wolf, Kate MacLeod,Mary Gibbons, and Johnny Cash, and that old standby, Traditional. Backing me up are some of my favorite musicians anywhere: singers Tom Rozum, Tim O'Brien, Kathy Kallick, The Burns Sisters, and Noe Venable; banjoists Craig Smith and Patrick Sauber, guitarists Scott Huffman, Nina Gerber, Roy Rogers, and David Grier; bassists Todd Sickafoose, Todd Phillips, and Andrew Conklin; fiddlers Suzy Thompson, Chad Manning,Brittany Haas, Darol Anger, Alex Hargreaves, and Tristan Clarridge (playing cello); and a smattering of percussion byBrian Rice, Ches Smith, and Billy Lee Lewis.
There is also a cameo appearance by two of NPR's most belovedradio voices.

It is a pleasure to see the young green grass shooting up under the dry bleached white gold on the California hillsides. A good drenching this month put an end to the fire season. It was glorious! The sky is a deep blue where the fog has burned away, and the air is crisp and fresh. My garden pretty-much died from lack of attention this last summer, but things are starting to sprout again on their own, and it's beginning to look like all was not lost. The Earth has an amazing capacity to bounce back, if we let it.
We hope to see you somewhere down the road. Walk softly, Laurie
