The Dharma Bums have been going in one form or another since 1975, founded by Phil Void (not his birth name—he changed it on the advice of a Tibetan oracle). But a pivotal moment was in 1989 when Phil was trying to decide whether to focus on his Tibetan PhD studies or pursue his interest in music. He had an audience with the Dalai Lama who examined the music and commented, "You have a special talent for these songs." So Phil has spent the last 34 years singing about Buddhist thought and calling for the freedom of Tibet—his barnstormer 'Rangzen' has been translated into 22 languages and was recorded by Russia's top pop star amongst others. Phil is based in Woodstock, USA, but has played all over the world (including Madison Square Gardens and even, once, in Lhasa, Tibet). He spends a lot of time in Dharamsala, India, home of the Tibetan government in exile (where the Dalai Lama always tugs Phil's beard when he meets him). London is en route for him and he's stopping over for a few days, keen to play here while he's in Town. The Furbelows are honoured to play host for a joint gig a the Cross Kings in London's King's Cross on Wednesday 21st October.

The Dharma Bums are a large and wide-spread family and Phil plays with whichever of them are around in the city he is in—Chris Stein from Blondie has played and regular violinist Tim Carbone has himself played with Bruce Sprinsteen, Pete Seeger and Rick Danko of The Band. On this occasion Furbelows bassist Clayton Hartley will be handling the low frequency chores.

The bill will also feature Phil's long-time collaborator Clayton Denwood (yes, another Clayton—what are the chances?), a performer of Dylanesque folk rock. We are also hoping to draw some musicians on stage from the Tibetan diaspora in London, to make a unified evening of Tibetan pride, spirituality and hope. In which The Furbelows will stick out like a sore thumb.

We're at the Cross Kings, home of The Furbelows' quarterly Cirque de Crème Anglaise nights—though we're actually in the basement Jester Bar this time, not the ground floor bar.

It's £5 on the door and things kick off at 7.30pm, with music from 8pm. Not sure of the running order yet, but the Dharma Bums will be on about 10.15 and The Furbelows will probably be on first.
