a narrow escape

It's been my scariest day yet. I'm still drifting around out here, hopping from ice chunk to ice chunk and doing my best to hide. My mom says I've floated into the Ocean into a place called the Front. That means I'm going to have to keep hiding from sealers cause a new seal hunt just started here today. There are a lot more sealers coming out and looking for me and my friends.

This morning I saw in the distance a Coast Guard boat that belongs to the government clearing ice out of the way. Then the hunters' boats following it. The Coast Guard boat was helping the seal hunters to find us. I wish the government guys who are in charge of the Ocean would use their boats to protect me instead of to help the sealers.

I've been hiding pretty well but not quite well enough. I swam away from several boats today but just an hour ago, while I was resting on a piece of ice, I must have fallen asleep. I woke up suddenly to this scary loud noise and bits of ice and water exploding next to me. Then there was another loud noise and a splash on the other side of me. I looked up and saw a man on a boat holding a long black thing and looking straight at me. I knew that it must be a gun, those scary things my mom told me about that hunters use to kill seals from far away. I froze for a couple more seconds and couldn't move, but just as the next big noise came I dove into the water and swam away. When i came up I was right behind a little ice chunk and I think they couldn't see me anymore cause the boat kept going. It left a trail of red water behind it. My heart was pounding for ages. It was so scary. I will really have to be more careful. I think I will be too scared to go to sleep ever again!

I am sorry the Candian Coast Guard isn't doing more on environmental protection and all they did was use their Ice Breakers. Glad you were able to swim away, Sunny. Keep swimming & hiding!

Please be careful and stay safe. I'm sitting here in tears after hearing your treacherous ordeal. I can't believe these guys can do this and still live with themselves. I'll keep praying for you. Please keep swimming and stay safe...only sleep at night when those horrible men aren't around. Keep hiding from those mean men, and hopefully they will be gone soon. Oh Sunny, I am so thankful that you can swim. You outwitted the evil sealers and I'm very proud of you. I am astonished that the coast guard is helping the sealers to find your family and friends. They should be ashamed! You are right, the coast guard should be protecting you and all the seals instead of helping those evil sealers. They are going to hear from me.

Have organizations like greenpeace been able to come up there and help save you and your family? It is best you sleep when you know that the sealers go home for the day. As soon as the boats arrive, swim as far away as possible.

Remember, that you have lots of friends worldwide who love you very much.

Hi Sunny, I'm just happy your staying away from those awful people. I just happened to look up at my Humane Society Calender one evening as I was on my computer checking up on you to see how you were. There was a little blurb on the month of April that went something like this," Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened" That is why these sealers can do what they do. They have no soul. They'll get what's coming to them. LUV YOU SUNNY!!!!

Well, little guy, I am so sorry to hear about your terrible ordeal today. You must only sleep at night. No more basking in the sun during the day. You'll have plenty of time for that after those murderous men have gone away. It won't be long, but you must stay safe. I'm glad that you can swim now. Keep practicing your diving -- it will save your life. Dive like a submarine!Everyday you will get a little bit stronger. I'm a strong swimmer. I wish I were there to protect you. By the way, if one of them happens to fall in the water, I know a great place where you can bit them....! I wrote to MSNBC the other night and told them they needed to cover your story. Sunny I am glad that you were able to escape those mean hunters and coast guard. One day they will get a taste of their own medicine. But I will keep you in my prayers. Hopefully the hunt will end soon.
