Gig Review - Born To Destruct and Monica & The Explosions @ The White Horse 11.07.09

Anyone who has not had the pleasure of seeing MONICA & THE EXPLOSION, a one woman punk band, could be forgiven for thinking that she had turned up at the wrong place and in fact needed to be a bit further north to attend the ELY FOLK FESTIVAL. Well don't let the Scandinavian beauty; the acoustic guitar and the whimsical, ethereal quality fool you.
This young lady is a dynamo. Monica performs with such raw energy and clearly loves playing in front of an audience. As I have said before this is performance at its most naked. Just a guitar and a microphone, no place to hide, nowhere to run. And she is an artist very much in demand.
Since I saw her at The Bakers, when she opened VIVA LA LOCAL IX, she has been playing to audiences large and small, indoors and out, up and down the UK, and it's easy to see why. I think the set Monica played tonight was better than at VLL IX (and that was good) in terms of content and balance. It would be true to say that MONICA & THE EXPLOSION did get the evening off to an explosive start, enjoying playing her first gig for a few weeks too.
