March 21, 2009 - Saturday

Current mood:  frustrated
I want to address a subject that is been on mine and other struggling independent artists.  It has come to my attention that mine and other artists music is being illegally stolen from various websites such as limewire and simular sites.  I have to admit.  It is somewhat flattering that my music is worth being stolen however;  if I'm worth stealing, thans I'm worth buying. I am not one of these rich rockstars with a label backing me.,  I am independant.  I fund all my own production, distribution, and tours.  This is how i feed my kids.   If I don't make some money at this, then I will be forced to quit producing music for you.  Please... make me an offer pay what you can and i will send you high quality downloads along with bonus features which you can't steal.  If you are a true fan, then support me by buying some at least, I'll work with you.  I love You all but I will have to quit and get a regular job if I can't make a living.  Illegally downloading rich rockstars music may not hurt them much.  It absolutely leaves me in poverty.  I'm just trying to make a living.  So if you steal 3, buy three,  help us independants stay working by not cheating us.  we don't make much, mostly break even.  I want to tour and come to your town to perform.  but It is not possible if I can't fund it through my mp3 or cd sales, so please at least buy some,  trully support us as fans buy buying and not stealing,.
                Love you all,
                                    John David Palmer

Why is it justifiable to steal someone's work if they're a rich rockstar?

Is it a right for someone to steal a piccaso because arts a right... how ridiculous does that sound. Your splitting hairs. is it a privellege to steal a cd from a music store because music is a right? I think your views are unrealistic and your justifying your transgressions. I share my music with plenty. I have also put time my own money to produce this. so if you think that walking into an establishment and eating there food for free because eating is a right, than you should look at you own values. those ppl bought and prepared the food for you. In that same analogy, perhaps if they created there own music to listen to, or prepared there own food, then that is a right. It is not thier right to tlke someone's food from a farmer because they have a right to eat. If they grew there own, then it's thier right. other than that is simply theft. If you ask me and I give it to them, then it's their right because I gave it. It's a right to have clothing, does it make it right to go to a mall a just take it. I'm not trying to be harsh. I'm not trying to get rich just tring to enable my self to continue crating and distributing my music without going broke. I just hope to break even mostly. this is something that is not going away. so something has to give. Make an offer... send me something in trade thats called bartering. Offer me a dollar a penny, or ask me to send it for free.. at least it would be my choice not some third party website who profits through their advertising and had nothing to do with the creative or production process....... ......Trully thank you for your input and I am open to any constructive advice,...... I'm just gonna say this: I think it's pretty tacky to insult your fans by calling them thieves. You have a skewed view of this concept; let me enlighten you. Maybe if the radio stations played your music, more people would listen to your songs on the radio, but alas, radio is a joke. Therefore, music downloading is the new radio. Do you remember the old days, when you would listen to the radio, and hear lots of different artists, and gave songs a listen a few dozen times b4 making a purchasing decision? well, bye bye good ole days. I'm just saying, by calling some of your fans thieves, you are insulting them, and they will end up not being your fans. They may well have downloaded a couple of your songs, and liked em so much, they went and bought your complete cd. do you have proof they didnt? or they may have gone to see you in concert. do you think they will, now that you are getting all metallica on them? Your lack of earned funds from your music career isnt the fault of your fans. You shouldnt insult them with this drivel. Not everyone is meant to make money in music. If youre in it strictly for the money, and your not making enough, maybe you should stop. Sorry if that sounds callous; it sounds like youre more interested in the money than sharing your music with music loving people. I dont give a damn if i ever make a penny in this business. I write and play because i love music. I love to share my music too. If anybody wants my music, take it. my two cents.

well said. If someone is stealing your music and you're not on the radio you should simply write it off as free advertising. It's just music. Perhaps you should get a day job.

Hello I saw your blog and read it. Im one of your friends. I have had my music downloaded and stolen now for years. I finally gave in and said it is a losing cause. I am an engineer and computer service provider by trade. I know all I need to know about music piracy and where it is today. The thing is is that you might be interested in how it started. It started with the introduction of Napster coinciding with the lies perpetuated by MP3.com. According to MP3.com a long time ago music "is now a service". Thats right Mike Robertson made that quote and geared the website from an extremely cool place for artists and SONG WRITERS like you and I to share and possibly even gain stardom. It seemed fantastic in the beginning year or years. I personally had music listed in there Top 50 for all genres 2 times while I was affiliated with the site. Ok so then what. Well Napster was created and all of a sudden all my downloads and fans disappeared completely. No more people emailing me saying how much they liked my stuff. I became lumped in with the big label signed acts I suppose and people just would queue up everything and download and did not care about us in the least. That is what is happening here and everywhere. This is why the music business is done. Song Writers. That is real ones might feel like me now and not even want to do it anymore. To me writing songs is about sharing our feelings with others. Entertaining. When the communication factor dissapears between the artist and the listener it is over. Maybe my words will help you realize that this is the reality of the music business now. In my opinion Rock is dead and when Rock dies well you see what happens. Good luck to you and I hope you havnt fallen as deep into the abyss so to speak as I.

The old saying goes: If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. People are going to steal music. It's just a fact. All you can do is transition yourself to that market. NIN and Radiohead, among others, have paved the way. Give your album out for free in low-quality mp3s. Offer your album in higher-quality mp3s or FLAC files for a fee of, say, $5. Offer your cd's for $10, and offer free mp3 downloads when you sell the CD to someone. That's all you can do. The music industry as it was once known is a dead entity. Labels are dead. Radio is dead. I understand completely everything you say, but what you need to do is transition yourself to meet the current market. The old market is dead. It won't be coming back.

..This is the most relevent and intelligent response out of what otherwise seems rather trivial...Bravo sir for having an understanding of the market...if you wanna' make money you gotta' play the game....and of course, know your audience..

This represents an interesting pair of perspectives in my opinion...Theft from artists and in general, as is pointed out during the course of this discussion, is fundamentally wrong I quite agree.....However, I see the music business as having been stealing from everybody that's ever been charged £20 for a CD up to a few years ago that's worth £8 now, to support the bloated, unnecessary self indulgence of the industry in general for the last fifty years.....Who's right? Nobody, it's one big trough of thieving hypocrites. It boils down to an interesting personal choice...Punter's should learn not to rob small independent artists with low overheads, but any band who's searching for rock stardom in the old school sense, or has been living off the fat and making monstrous amounts of cash for years, should get used to the new reality.....Personally, I give all our recorded music away for free and on as personal a basis as I can muster. There isn't any other way at the moment. I make more from donations than I do from record sales, and that's been the way for years across the course of several projects.

Heres an Idea.. Lets face facts here people are going to steal your music no matter what. U have to use this to go in your favor. give the people some free stuff. Make them want more and they will buy. It sucks whats happening to you. I feel you. Stay strong and keep doing what you like.

Im sorry but I have to agree with the person who said music is a right. If you arent making very good money doing this, then find a job with a salary and benefits and play music as a hobby. All the musicians I know write and play their music for their own enjoyment, and the fact that people liked it enough for them to download it was payment enough. Like mike said, dont go all Metallica!

I ALWAYS buy the full c.d. if I really like the artist's music. Even the rich rockstars. Call me old fashioned but I call it showing love and support.
