A canny night indeed. I counted 17 singers. we got round the room at least twice before half 11 and some of us were singing till 2 in the bar! When the club opened i thought id keep a list of all the singers and songs (like Ron Angel does at the Stockton Folk Club) so we could introduce a song like they introduce a ball on the national lottery ...."'the water is wide' is making its 3rd appearance tonight, first sang on 23rd feb 07, its proved the 4th most recurrent song at the club"... or something like that. This has not really taken off however as drinking seems a more enjoyable alternative to writing. However, as i've discovered this bloggy thing, im going to try to write down who sing every week.
Here we go...
wait for it...
Dave and Sean (Mike was playing truant...viral infection...my arse) did Jolly Waggoners (or is it one 'g') Willy Went to Westerdale, the Press Gang, the Light Dragoon and probably a few more as the night got more blurred)
Kay was there and she did Bunch of Thyme, She Moved through the Fair, Galway Shawl and more
Barry refused to sing untill after midnight and did Corrie Doon i think
Ian the Old Man of the Sea did Arthur McBride, Young Banker amongst others
Madeline did Come by the Hills and others
Jean did some nice songs including Raglan Road
Christine performed her song 'Winkle Picking'
Lawrence forgot his uke and did an unaccompanied Danny Boy
Bretheny sang 'Sovay Sovay' and something else that was rousing
Peter ("I don't know any folk songs") sang a song he'd written himself. someone had cornered me at the bar when he was introducing it so i didnt catch its name (sorry)
Johnny is fast becoming the club jester. he followed up his Reggae incest song of the fortnght before with a Mike Harding number and another
Julie told us how she came third in 'New Faces' once upon a time and sang Streets of London and Fields of Gold
We all missed Jeff Butterfield who wasn't there
Judith Garbutt returned to the club and hit some wonderful high notes
George and Marion were back (George's heckles get less convincing each week) with a couple of beauties
and Peter the Johnson had come from Manchester to make his debut. He sang Famous Blue Raincoat amongst others
Yes a fine fine night had by all. Apologies for the time it took to turn the radiators off. Linda kept convincing me that it was already off untill she realised, with sweat pouring from my beard, that i wasnt talking about the radio!
See yes on 6th April..Good Friday...so no songs with meat in please
