The night the comet shot through the sky, Merlin prophesized the fierce dragon tail which blazed beyond Gaul, heralded a son, a prince to hold power over all the kingdoms beneath its reach. Its other exhilarant tail symbolized a daughter, whose sons and grandsons would rule over Logres. But as far as children, Uther hadn’t given any thought to settling down to a wife.

Until Easter in London, when he saw her at the banquet he’d thrown for the nobles. The image of plumate auburn hair and eyes like the ones on a peacock's tail feathers set his mind awhirl. Every dimple and curve of her luminous face called to him. His eyes absorbed her image. He could even smell her scent, a swirl of wild lavender fused with juicy apples, merged with plump bilberries and edged with a musky hawthorn fragrance.

The jealous Duke of Tintagel dared to leave Uther’s feast, without his leave, and worse, he took his wife with him. The king commanded him to return but he refused. Uther warned him that he would destroy Cornwall. He marched his vast army on Dimiloc where Gorlois had retreated.

Uther held it under siege. He’d blocked off all roads to and from the stronghold seven nights ago and yet he was no closer to an end to this drawn-out madness. No nearer to holding his dream woman in his arms. She wasn’t even there. Gorlois had sent his wife to his hill fort of Tintagel on the shore. Uther sensed someone had entered the tent and turned toward them.

Ulfin, his best friend who’d fought by his side in scores of battles, stood there. His clear, blue eyes were wide with concern. “My king, what course do we take now?”
