DENISE GIARDINA READING
Malaprop’s welcomes celebrated author Denise Giardina, who will present her new novel, Emily’s Ghost. This reimagining of the Bronte family revolves around the passion of Emily Bronte and her relationship with an idealistic young clergyman. Giardina, the writer in residence at West Virginia State University, is also a deacon in the Episcopal Church and an activist for land reform and social justice in the Appalachian mining community.

Authors Dwight McCarter and Joe Kelley will read from and sign their book, Meigs Line, which chronicles the search for the official boundary line between the Cherokee and American nations. They use antique instruments and fragments of Jonathan Meig’s 1802 journal to piece together a vividly rendered story of history, people, and place.

FRED CHAPPELL READING
Malaprop’s is honored to welcome former North Carolina Poet Laureate and 2005 Thomas Wolfe Prize winner Fred Chappell, who will read from his latest collection of poems, Shadow Box. Chappell, who was born in nearby Canton, is acclaimed for both his poetry and his numerous essays and works of fiction, and is a master of rendering Southern society and tradition. Come early to get a good seat!
A wine and cheese reception will follow the reading.

Noted astrologer and mythologist M. Kelley Hunter will discuss her Ph.D. studies in philosophy, cosmology, and myth as well as her books Living Lilith: Four Dimensions of the Cosmic Feminine and Black Moon Lilith. Hunter’s articles have appeared in a number of publications and she speaks at conferences for psychology, astrology, and holistic programs both at home in the United States and abroad.

Acclaimed science fiction author David J. Williams will read from and sign his book, Burning Skies, a futuristic thriller concerning a fiendish plot from the cyber terrorism group, Autumn Rain. Williams, a Yale graduate and former video game programmer, has received praise for his complex and detailed world-building, and his ability to craft realistic characters and political intrigue.

Charleston, SC author Batt Humphreys will present his first novel, Dead Weight, a thrilling recreation of one of South Carolina’s most notorious and racially-charged murder trials. Batts draws from actual court testimony and real events to give a vivid picture of a city caught between the realities of the current time and a dying culture of the past. Batts worked for 15 years as a senior producer for CBS News in New York before returning home to the South. He has covered a number of landmark events, including the morning of September 11, 2001.

Magendie, who is also a published poet and photographer, is co-editor of The Rose and Thorn Literary Ezine.

Award-winning fiction author Ellyn Bache will read from and sign her latest novel, Daughters of the Sea, a novel a home and friendship that chronicles three generations of women who all share a special affinity for water. Bache began her writing career as a freelance journalist, switching to fiction after the birth of her second child. She has since written a number of books for adults, children, and teens, and her short story collection, The Value of Kindness, won the Willa Cather Fiction Prize.

Charlotte author Mark de Castrique returns to Malaprop’s to present his latest mystery, The Fitzgerald Ruse. Scott Fitzgerald manuscript. De Castrique, a playwright and Emmy Award-winning television producer, is also an adjunct professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
