What Truly Scares You?

Lately, I've noticed that the books I've been reading or movies I've watched on TV have all been based on fears. From bio-terrorism to mega monster freaks that kill, there are a lot of things in this world that can scare us.

Using my psychology background, I automatically want to categorize it, find a common demoninator and find out what it is that scares people so much and how can we face that fear?

I have a few theories but before I went forward, I thought I would ask you because you all rock and tend to help me see things I missed or see things in a new way.

For example, a few things that really scare the crud out of me:

* Clowns - I had a huge blow up punching bag clown as a baby and I hated that thing. Add in IT and the clown under the bed in the movie Poltergeist. Nuff said. (Also add in, mimes, ventriloquist dummy's and any of those freaky old fashioned dolls that just look evil.)

* Tornado's - Just don't like them. Don't mind storms, just not the green ones

* Closed in hot places - I was stuck in a playground jungle gym plane, upside down, with my arms pinned to my sides, when I was a kid, didn't get out for a few hours. Since then I tend to get the creeps when I am in a small or enclosed area that has no free flowing air or a place I can see the exit.

I know why I fear those things and I can see what they all have in common but before I go further in my thinking, I'd like to ask you:
What truly scares you. And why, if you don't mind me asking.

Dying....and I don't have an explanation for you. I think that it is because people don't die and get to where they go and come back. Yes, there are people that have died shortly and come back, but do they really get to where they are going?? I don't have that answer, but I know dying is something that scares me.

another mini question for you:

picture yourself in a white room
no windows or doors
it is not hot or cold but comfortable
the room has no visible light sources but it has a cool soft glow so it's not dark

how do you feel in that room?

Methinks you are probably more ok with death or dying then you think you are - the white room symbolizes death and dying, or how you feel about it, deep inside - I know I said the same thing, even though I am not happy with closed spaces, the mental of the room made me feel safe and comfortable. I have always thought that was an interesting concept

Poverty (not having enough) - because I spent most of my adult life with not enough and witness everyday how close I am (and countless others) to losing what I finally have for the first time in my life.

Poisonous animals - I don't stand a chance against them.

Out of control fires - fire is a living thing with a voracious appetite: usually for buildings, lives, and acres and acres of wooded land inhabited by countless animals.

Being in the middle of a large crowd - because if there was a sudden need to exit, i would be crushed before I got out.

I can relate to the fear of death, but that is equal to fear of the unknown. We fear things that are unfamiliar.

My one constant fear is bees. When I was young, I was walking in the front yard barefoot, and stepped on a yellow jacket/ground wasp nest and got the *h*t stung out of my foot. Also, riding a bike one time with my mouth open, a bee flew in and stung my tongue.

makes a lot of sense... like spiders make me very uneasy - I like that word btw, very few things literally scare me but I know of a lot of un-ease, which I try to get over by doing or facing it - I think there is a difference between the two, or I can see a difference =D

Nice to meet you!! Thank you for answering =)

Drowning scares me..I can sit by the ocean and love it for hours and walk in the water..but I am still afraid of water. I have never had any bad experiences or anything, but when I get a cold..not being able to breathe very well makes me very upset..I was thinking..maybe I had drowned in a previous life..hummm

I don't care much for deep dark water that I can't see the bottom of - like the ocean or deep lakes - I love listening to the ocean and sitting on beaches but don't much care for going in... I think it's more to do with what is in there with me LOL Interesting point though, previous lives and how that affects us today in this one. *hugs*

Skywalker - Merlin

What really scares me is having a dream that is so real, has so much detail, is so believable, and has content that scares me so much, that I am fixated on the dream and do not wake up. Sometimes, the dream is one where I am being chased and the scenery is rapidly changing like water. I run and yet is feels like I am standing still and the landscape is the one moving past me. The 'object' (that is all I can say about it; not man, not animal, but alive) is is chasing me and because I am not moving it is constantly getting closer...... at the point of contact by the pursurer, the dream shifts rapidly, and I am laying down. Then I have a 'false awakening' where I am dreaming I am awake and remembering the dream (within the dream), and realize that I have not escaped the threat. The part that scares me I when this repeats. My greatest fear is that I will not come out of it! I am afraid of being stuck in the dream forever. Weird, huh? (Thankfully, I eventually wake up ;-)

I started studying dreams my first year in college after having such vivid and lucid ones and also having terrible night mares as a kid.

Anxiety causes a lot of those types of dreams, trying to run and not going anywhere, not being able to fix on anything. I never liked the dream/sleep paralysis, that freaks me out more then anything because of the helpless feelings.

Just remember, you can always tell yourself to wake up, unless it's a really really really good dream =D

lilli,

Earthquakes are my scariest, scariest thing. Fortunately, I don't live in California, anymore.
I live in Florida, now. I am scared of hurricanes.....lightning...we get some wicked lightning, here in South Florida....and, any damn thing that might be swimming in the ocean.

Also, I am a good bit scared about the way this country seems to be going. People are so uptight, I worry about civil insurrection.

I grew up in So Cal and I LOVE earthquakes... mostly because I ended up taking this really interesting geology course and during that class we had the Northridge quake and got to see the aftershocks from the 5th story - I guess being in it helps get by it, for me anyway, although being in a tornado, would probably NOT help. Totally understand that swimming in the ocean stuff - no thanks, if I can't see it or if it has more teeth then I have, nope LOL

After going thru the riots in LA, I am not too happy about any uprising, which makes me happy about keeping my guns!

lilli,

Yes, we did have to be a little "rough" to survive in CA. Florida has a kind of bad reputation, but, mostly, the gang bangers do each other. The rest of us live somewhere else. I have a gun. I have a shop. Occasionally, I make some cash money. Did I mention I have a gun?

The ocean...things have BRUSHED UP AGAINST MY LEG MORE THAN ONE TIME. I would not have, ever stepped into that water, but for my 3 daughters, who were too small to wade in by themselves...."Mommi, take us in the 'big, cold, water'." Who can resist walking in to a huge body of unknown cold water?

I took control of my life. Now, I have the "Big, hot water."
hugs,
lilli

I remember my first job was at a Burger King in Hawaiian Gardens, which was nothing like it's name, it was the border of the "place you didn't want to be after dark." A elderly couple came in and asked me if I knew where this Garden was as it sounded lovely - oy!

I'll take my big hot water in a nice tub overlooking the Vegas strip or something - I think I would probably suck at camping now, although I loved it as a kid, I wussed out =)

Hello My Dear Christy,
I have a few fears.

Fear of heights (restricted to tall buildings that sway in the wind when your on top)

And the companion to this is standing at the base of a tall skyscrapper and looking up instead of down freaks me out.

Fear of bees & wasps, etc.. ( Mom is allergic to them (Deathly) don't know if I have the same
allergy.

Fear of snakes (just don't like them)

Fear of bears (Ran into the ass end of one at yosemite! Scared the crap out of me)

:) Love ya..

Luve ya

My only rational fear is of not being able to breathe. I have handfulls of irrational ones, though. Like, wide open spaces. Taking the trash out in the rain, or clotheslines in the mist. Sewer drains. Not being able to see behind myself in the dark. Never being a mother again. And...probably most irrational...that I'll run into my father.

You caught me on this one, I'm not sure now. Up until this weekend, something that has really scared me is losing my job and subsequently my home (and belongings, big whoop there though). I haven't had anyone in this world to turn to when things aren't running right, and therefore mega-anxiety always sitting in the back of my mind about it. This has just changed, and now I must meditate to see what else is in there.

I do not fear dying. Snakes still make me jump like hell, but not really afraid afraid anymore. Just hard-wiring now. Same for drowning. There's an interesting thought for you...when the fear is gone, but the hard-wired first reaction of terror is still there.

I have that hardwire feeling with clowns and spiders I think - I really really don't like clowns and if I see them, I know they are clowns but I still jump and or freak, depending on how evil they look. I wonder how much is truly that reaction we are used to giving, as opposed to honest fear... that one I will ponder on myself
