Last night was the Queensryche contest which many have heard about. Former All Too Human singer, Don Duzan, and two others were selected to sing a cover tune to backing tracks by Queensryche off their latest CD "Take Cover". The contest was held before the Queensryche concert at The House of Blues on Sunset Strip in Los Angeles on Friday night. Unfortunately (due once again to work), I was not able to witness the event but will sum up witness accounts.
Three people were selected as finalists to sing before the show. As it turns out, one guy cancelled. The other guy thought the contest was on Saturday and barely showed up 10 minutes before he had to sing. He sang "Welcome to the Machine" by Pink Floyd. Don sang "Neon Knights" by Black Sabbath and won hands down. Scott Rockenfeld (drummer for Queensryche) was watching his performance from the side of the stage and as Don walked off, Scott told Don, "it's gonna be fun playing with you tonight during the encore".
Queensryche does their show and closes with "Eyes of a Stranger" then it's time for Don. Geoff Tate introduces him and after asking a few questions, the band starts. Tate sings the first line and Don takes it from there. The place was packed. By the time he got to the break before the solo that screams "Neon Knights", the place erupted! They loved him! Even Geoff Tate was smiling! :) When Don walked off the stage (after giving the "I'm not worthy" bow to every member in the band), all Tate said was, "Wow!"
Congrats to Don on what I'm sure was a lifelong dream come true for him and from what I hear, an outstanding performance with the band.

P.S. - I am currently working on a project with Don called "Engage Eight" which will be released on Astral Sun Records this Summer.
