Oftentimes, we don't know ourselves as well as we might think we do.  Combine that with the fact that life isn't fair and that we don't always get what we feel we deserve and you have the foundation for Second Verse.

My protagonist, Gail Larsen, feels she's bearing the brunt of the less-than-equitable treatment a lesbian couple receives if they fail to protect themselves with all the necessary legal documents for health care actions, disposition of property, and directives as to who will hold decision making authority in the event of an incapacitating illness.  Gail's partner, Marissa, is injured and left unable to speak for herself.  Without the proper pieces of paper to establish her rightful place in Marissa's life, Gail is forced into the excruciating role of expendable observer.

Gail ultimately finds some measure of peace and accepts what has happened.  She moves beyond her grief and dares to love again --- only to find that many of the same demons are lying in wait for her.  And once again, she finds herself grappling with those universal questions of, "Why is life so hard?"  "Does everything always have to be so unfair?"  "Why can't I just have what I want?"

Second Verse
is my attempt to frame a story that reassures us that the sky does brighten after the storm, that every difficult experience we've survived makes us more receptive to the next uplifting opportunity, and that even though we might not find our rhythm as soon as the music starts to play, if we can keep dancing a while longer, we'll eventually hear our true heart's song.
