It's been wwwaaaaaayyyyy too long since I wrote a blog!
So...Flashmosh does Manchester eh? Well Jilly's presented plenty of characters, to say the least! There was the mohicaned punk guy who got his cock out in front of me to take a pic of it, the one lady-goth dressed head to toe in PVC dancing on her lonesome whenever I went into room 4, the three girls that wouldn't let go of each others hand and walked round the club in a long chain, plus the other group of girls dancing only in their bras and finally the two half naked 40 year old blokes who told me I "should be a model" ?!
Music-wise the night couldn't have been much better (except possibly some of Manchester's own Sonic Boom Six), the fish bowl presented a fucking good mix and a friendly DJ too. Firstly a big dollop of punk-rock from Rancid, Pennywise and the Descendents. Next up plenty of pop-punk to get everyone dancing starting with Damn-It from Blink 182 and more from Sum41 and of course, Green Day. Into the retro now with some ace tunage from the Undertones, the Clash, Buzzcocks, Blondie, the Specials and Madness. This brought us right into some good old skanking songs including Goldfinger, Less Than jake, Reel Big Fish, Save Ferris and (my personal favourites) No Doubt!
A good reflection of a club I reckon is the tunes you hear in more than one room or 'crossovers' which in the case of Jilly's were Self Esteem by the Offspring and The Impression That I Get from the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. So Jilly's gets a good old thumbs up from me (despite some dodgy clientele) and for those of you that have never been to Manc get yourselves down to the Alt shopping haven that is Affleck's Palace - basically the whole of Camden squeezed into a 4 story labyrinth of a Victorian building (
unfortunately not open on Sundays).
