Review of new Headsmith Album, by Rod Goodway
HEADSMITH "Aint Done Yet " U.K. Private Pressing ( Big Fish 007 )
Since the days of the first LIVE expeditions of ETHEREAL COUNTERBALANCE (1992 – 1997 ) when PHIL SMITH was an invaluable member of the band, not only as psychedelic lead- guitar warrior who offered me the use of his own band (including awesome drummer DAN TILBURY ) but as a multi-instrumentalist in his own right, complete with his own recording studio, 'The BIG FISH', which rapidly gained a fine reputation.( Indeed, the entire "Mellifluous Confluence" album was recorded there and Phil added much of his musical experience & prowess.)
Anyway, since those far-off days Phil's own band HEADSMITH has been working hard in a LIVE capacity and, in the process, kicking-out some fine blues-based Rock with a hard Psychedelic cutting edge. And THIS is the latest album, which includes much of the LIVE set which Phil and fellow excellent band-members BAZ PAYNE (Bass) and TONY McMILLAN
(Drums) have taken to a multitude of venues in recent times.
My favetracks include the gorgeous "Mama Said" with it's classic guitar riff and overall sense of 'head connection', and the Tom Petty-like 'road-movie vision' of the title track "Aint Done Yet", plus perennial LIVE favourites', "Love Song" ( which can hit you in the head & heart simultaneously), and "I
Doubt It" with its cavernous (edging on feedback) guitar solo … plus, a
nice touch, finishing this set on a down-home Blues, "Slip Of The Tongue"
featuring PAUL BLOUNT ..keyboards.
Not done yet by any means. This is a class act!! CD £ 8
