OH, THE IMMENSE LIBRARY OF TUNES, COUPLED WITH THE STREETS, TREES, AND SMELLS OF WINNIPEG IN AUTUMN...REPLETE LIFE TO BE SURE.
TONIGHT I DROVE AROUND TOWN WITH A SELECTION OF EARLY SURF INSTRUMENTALS PLAYING...AN ALBUM CALLED "PULP MUSIC VOL. 1 - INSTROS". FOR THE MOST PART THEY WERE OBSCURE INSTRUMENTALS BY GROUPS THAT PROBABLY HAD ONE SHOT IN A RECORDING STUDIO. FAR PAST THE INDIVIDUAL CUTS AND MELODIES WAS THE GENERAL VIBE...THE FEELING AND TASTE OF A DEFINITE ERA...TIME TRAVEL AGAIN. IF ONE CAN REALLY "ATTACK" A DAY OF LIFE WHICH DOESN'T CONTAIN PAIN OR CRISIS, HE OR SHE CAN BEGIN TO SEE THE WONDER OF IT ALL..THE TRICK IS TO OBTAIN THE BELOVED AND ELUSIVE ABSENCE OF PAIN OR CRISIS. AT THAT POINT, THE "SIMPLE" THINGS BECOME NOT SO SIMPLE. WHEN YOU HAVE ALWAYS HAD TWO HANDS, THEN THAT'S JUST THE WAY IT IS...YOU HAVE TWO HANDS.
EARLIER TODAY, A GIRL SERVED ME MY BURGER AND ONION RINGS DOWNTOWN AND SHE ONLY HAD ONE HAND...IT LOOKED AS THOUGH SHE HAD ONCE HAD THE OTHER HAND BUT HAD SOMEHOW LOST IT. AS I ATE I THOUGHT ABOUT HER AND HOW SHE MUST HAVE ADJUSTED...ANY MINOR MIRACLE... AS I DROVE THROUGH THE ELM-LINED AVENUES OF MY HOMETOWN AND BIRTHPLACE I WATCHED FOR PEOPLE. I TRIED TO SUM UP EACH OF THEIR INDIVIDUAL STORIES...TENDED TO MEASURE THEIR EVENING UP AGAINST MINE HYPOTHETICALLY...WONDERED IF I WERE HAVING A BETTER EVENING THAN THEY WERE...IN MOST CASES I WOULD THINK I WAS...BUT PERHAPS THAT'S JUST INDEPENDENCE-FUELED ARROGANCE. HOW WOULD ANYONE EVER REALLY KNOW...ONE CAN'T...
AND SO I DROVE AROUND SOME MORE AND PUT THE iPOD ON RANDOM...THIS PARTICULAR ONE HAS JUST ABOUT TEN THOUSAND TRACKS SO I DIDN'T  HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT IT WOULD SERVE UP...FIRST I HEARD AN OBSCURE CUT FROM THE SOUNDTRACK TO "FERRY CROSS THE MERSEY" BY GERRY & THE PACEMAKERS...THEN CAME MARK DINNING DOING "A STAR IS BORN", THE FOLLOW UP TO "TEEN ANGEL"...THEN CAME "THE ONE IN THE MIDDLE" BY MANFRED MANN...AND THAT WAS IT...I WAS BACK IN THE DEVERONS AND IT WAS 1964 AND I WAS ON MY WAY TO A GIG...THE LEAVES WERE FALLING, THE WIND HAD A CHILL IN  IT, HALLOWEEN WAS COMING ON THE WEEKEND...I KNEW EXACTLY WHAT TIME OF YEAR IT WAS BY THE SMELLS AND FEELINGS...AND I ALMOST THOUGHT FOR A NANO SECOND THAT I WAS ON MY WAY TO RIVER HEIGHTS COMMUNITY CLUB TO MEET EDD AND DEREK AND RONN AND BRUCE...GOOD GOD IT FELT THAT WAY...THE DEVERONS HAD STOLEN "THE ONE IN THE MIDDLE" AND CHANGED THE NAMES TO OUR OWN...IT BECAME A REAL THING WITH US THAT LAST YEAR...MOMENTS LIKE THAT TEND TO MAKE ME ACCEPT THE POSSIBILITY OF ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING...AND DAMNED IF IT ISN'T THE MUSIC THAT ALWAYS TRIGGERS THEM. I KNOW WHAT OTHER PEOPLE'S MUSIC DOES TO ME, SO IF MY STUFF DOES ANYWHERE NEAR THAT TO THOSE OTHER THAN MYSELF THEN I'VE INDEED LIVED AN UNUSUAL LIFE.

I THOUGHT ABOUT SO MUCH TONIGHT...MA CLEAN'S BOYS, MY MOM, AFGHANISTAN, AMERICAN HEALTH CARE, THE BALLOON BOY HOAX...ONE SECOND EVERYTHING MADE COMPLETE SENSE IN ALL ASPECTS...NEXT SECOND THE WORLD AND MY LIFE ALL SEEMED ABSOLUTELY OUT OF CONTROL...

I'VE JUST FOUND AN INCREDIBLE BOX SET I BOUGHT OVER TEN YEARS AGO...IT'S THE BEAR FAMILY CONWAY TWITTY BOX. IT CONTAINS 8 DISCS WITH ABOUT 225 TRACKS. IT'S "THE ROCK AND ROLL YEARS"..IT'S CONWAY BEFORE HE STARTED DOIN' THAT SECOND RATE COUNTRY SHIT...CONWAY WAS A REAL ROCKER IN THE LATE FIFTIES AND MANY STONE COLD COUNTRY FANS DON'T REALIZE IT TO THIS VERY DAY. I BOUGHT MANY SINGLES BY CONWAY ON THE MGM LABEL, INCLUDING DANNY BOY, WHAT AM I LIVING FOR, LONELY BLUE BOY, AND MONA LISA...SO NOW, AFTER HAVING OWNED THIS MAGNIFICENT BEAR FAMILY ROCK HISTORY OF THE PRE COUNTRY CONWAY TWITTY FOR OVER A DECADE AND NEVER HAVING CONVERTED IT TO MP3'S, I'M GONNA GET DOWN TO BUSINESS AND GET ALL 225 TRACKS INTO MY LATEST iPOD...THIS WILL TAKE A WHILE, BUT IT'LL BE TIME WELL SPENT...

"AND I'M ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN THAT WHILE I'M DOING IT, THERE WILL OCCUR MOMENTS WHEREIN THE MEAN, UNSAVOURY PORTIONS OF THIS WORLD WILL BE HELD AT BAY, IN FAVOUR OF RESPLENDENT MUSICAL ENCOUNTERS, SENT NO DOUBT, BY THE MUSES AND GODS FROM THE FIRMAMENT..."

Man, having trouble connecting here...myspazzzzzzz

What really intrigues me about what you share here Burton is the diverse range of your music tastes. You no doubt have a select number of artists who have influenced the direction of your own music, albeit very distinct. Your ever-growing collection sounds amazing.

Are you sure old man winter can't get to you?? It is Winnipeg after all! ...sorry for that, couldn't resist. I'll bet you dream of waves cresting on a rocky coastal shoreline and palm trees et al. Cheers.

At one time, Conway Twitty was said to have had the most #1 hits in the history of country music (methinks that King George Strait has since eclipsed that mark), but I agree with you completely that most of it was second-rate - and feel that many of his most ardent fans never heard him rock out. SOMEONE in my house, either my dad or my oldest sister, had the 45 of Danny Boy, which may have been the first version of that old chestnut I ever heard...and it ROCKED!
Indeed, it is often the music from an era which takes us back to the magical times of our past...and can make us feel for a bit that time has stood still. Certainly, your music does that to/for us in the Clubhouse, and some of us got to go there with you last summer in Room 815. Sweet...
Thanks, Galoot, for sharing your muses...

IF MY STUFF DOES ANYWHERE NEAR THAT TO THOSE OTHER THAN MYSELF THEN I'VE INDEED LIVED AN UNUSUAL LIFE -
Burton - you are probably one of a small number of musicians who truly understand how YOUR music can touch, transcend, and in some cases transform a single moment in a listeners life.  Timeless Love brings memories of my late husband.  One and Only - "a hand to hold to give me grace growing old" WAS all he asked for during his last year. Permissible to Cry - helped me make it through an extreme life challenge.  Invisible, A Touch of Morning - These are on my Ipod and I listen to them 3-4 times a day as a reminder of the good.  Above the Ground -  excellant - I check that lost and found regularly! LOL These are but a few - I could probably list another 25 - but guess I'll save that for one of my own blogs!
I truly hope you know how deeply and profoundly your music reaches each of us.  I, for one, can not thank you enough for reaching into yourself and sharing with us wether it be in type or in lyric.

Halloween Happenings in the Prairies seems to involve witch or warlock crafts. The random picks involve a special brew. Haven't quite achieved the proper recipe but tasting and sampling only can improve the flavour. Possibly missing a major ingredient.  A witches brew indeed.

Time to relax and take care of yourself.

OLD MAN WINTER CAN'T GET TO ME...I'VE GOT THE MUSIC...HE DOESN'T STAND A CHANCE...
That damned music.

Take it easy and Happy Halloween!!

"ONE SECOND EVERYTHING MADE COMPLETE SENSE IN ALL ASPECTS...NEXT SECOND THE WORLD AND MY LIFE ALL SEEMED ABSOLUTELY OUT OF CONTROL..."

Know just how you feel, and I sometimes wonder if it's this way for everyone, or are there perspectives so different from my own that others never perceive the planet this way...

Krishnas or Buddhist monks, maybe??

I am always seeking balance, so ever aware when things are unbalanced...

...but somehow manage to feel joy every day, in spite of it all.

Your music does transport me.  Last week I drove back from Elmira NY, typically a 4.5 hour drive, but with traffic, about an 8 hour drive.  I put my ipod on, my Winnipeg playlist, and between you, Randy and Neil I felt like I was home in about 30 minutes...

burton, your out look on life, music, and your awesome memories, are truly an inspiration to us all! conway, was a true rocker, in the early days. don't know why he turned to country music. don't know why he felt like he should, unless, country music, made him feel better. i don't think his popularity dwindled. he was a "true rocker". i'd like to hear those 225 tracks, for sure! you are probably a walking music "encyclopedia"! thanks for sharing, as always. prayers for you and your mom, still comming your way, and god bless you both! †♥†

...FIRST I HEARD AN OBSCURE CUT FROM THE SOUNDTRACK TO "FERRY CROSS THE MERSEY" BY GERRY & THE PACEMAKERS...

Which obscure cut?  I must've played that album a thousand times.  There are a few albums that when I hear a cut on the radio, the player in my head kicks in with the cut that should follow because I've heard it in that sequence so many times.  I miss vinyl.  I know.  I'm an old fogie.  Ah well....

And re Old Man Winter - I know that's not what you mean, but I love the changing seasons here.  There's something special in each and every one of them.  Those first snowfalls that stay, when every tree branch is heavy with wet snow and the sun shines glistening on almost every flake and everything looks like a Currier & Ives card and I'm out at the dog park and I love breathing that crisp, CLEAN air.  And then along comes another flood of nostalgia when I was a kid and running after school to meet my friends at the (outdoor) skating rink.  I sometimes feel sorry for those who don't experience the four seasons fully.

Continue to live for the 'MOMENTS WHEREIN THE MEAN, UNSAVOURY PORTIONS OF THIS WORLD WILL BE HELD AT BAY'

Music is pure joy! It has the power to put you in the moment, in the 'now', and it has the power to take you right back to where you were when you listened to it the most. It not only brings back memories - it brings back feelings.

Some songs take me immediately back to hubbys & my crummy little apartment in Calgary in 1976-77-78. We didn't have much at the time except a stereo and many albums. It's all we needed! The Guess Who was very high on our favourites list, of course!

After hubby & I went to GW's fantastic concert at BC Place - the Running Thru Canada tour - I said to him as we walked back to the car afterwards, 'now I can die happy!'

Your show was absolutely joyous! Your musicianship blew us away! Your ease, humour and professionalism on stage was so fun! We sang along to every song and danced in our chairs .. we whooped and applauded madly after each song! I had wished there was some way to figure out where I could send you all a thankyou note. I wanted you to KNOW how your fantastic music, that played such a big part in the soundtrack of our lives, affected us in such a positive way.

"I KNOW WHAT OTHER PEOPLE'S MUSIC DOES TO ME, SO IF MY STUFF DOES ANYWHERE NEAR THAT TO THOSE OTHER THAN MYSELF THEN I'VE INDEED LIVED AN UNUSUAL LIFE."

Be assured, your music does that and more to us!! Not just an unusual life, but you've lived a very worthwhile life, no matter how difficult it may have been. For some reason you were given amazing talent that you were meant to share with the world. And share it you did, and it's available for the future denizens of humanity for all time.

Hubby has ALWAYS said, "Burton Cummings is in the top 5 best singers of rock music". The others are Steve Perry, Paul Rodgers, Roy Orbison and John Lennon, each of you with your own very distinctive sound - there is no question when we hear it, of who it is.

So now is my opportunity to tell you what a wonderful impact you've had on us. And I must say, on our  daughters as well, because they grew up listening to the Guess Who. Now our grandchildren are listening and loving it too.

The other day I was driving my 9 & 10 yr old gr'kids somewhere, and Roy Orbison's Pretty Woman came on the flash drive. My gr'son said "this reminds me of Grandma Barb" (their great gr'ma who died 2 yrs ago) and of being at her place! He was incredulous! I was witnessing his first music flashback and it was from when he was 3 & 4 yrs old! The memory stemmed from when his Gr'ma Barb had one of those cheesy singing fish plaques on her wall .. you pressed a button and it looked like the fish was singing the song, and it happened to be that particular Roy song. The look on gr'son's face as he remembered this was priceless.

So, from the bottom of my heart, thankyou ever so much for the very wonderful, positive impact you've had on my life.

Cheers,
Carol

INDEED LIVED AN UNUSUAL LIFE"..........
Well no doubt about it Burton.........Rest assured your music does move us.  I just listened to "Dream of a Child".  Need I say more?

By the way, last night I attended "A Life in the Theatre, An evening with Stephen Sondheim" at the Vogue Theatre here in Vancouver.  The man is over 80 with numerous, marvellous tales about his life, his career, his music and lyrics etc.... He is on the circuit doing this narrative about his career, his wonderful stories etc....kind of like The Actors Studio format.  As you have so many interesting experiences to tell of your own life and you tell them so well in the written word, did you ever think of doing something similar? travelling the country and telling YOUR story on stage in a similar format?  It would sell out all over Canada for sure! You have so much to say which is of interest. (Just a thought).............

Glad you are taking this time to notice the little things in this bewildering life we have.........

"Everything made complete sense"....Those seconds of clarity!

Music is the power. It is wonderful that it can bring back time. Your music does that...don't ever doubt it! I have time travel when I hear "His Girl" from the 60's... "Clap For the Wolfman" brings back memories, etc...

We all walk around with our own life happenings...wearing them like crowns or as crucifixes...the observer can never really know for sure if the outward matches the inward...but no matter...it is our life. That's all that there it is. Our own journey.

Cheers!

Exactly, "she must have adjusted", is the absolute necessity in life. Life will throw you many curves as you travel along. If you can learn to adjust your trip will be less painful. When you sit back and lament over the difficult times you have encountered you stop your progress. It took me a long time to get over my amputation. It would have been a lot better for all involved if I had realized this sooner rather than later.

I am going to visit my cousin's husband who next week is loosing his leg up to his hip from cancer. Because I am the "old" amputee everyone thinks I can make a difference. After researching this particular rare prosthetic I sent all the information to them. I even managed to find a prosthetist who lives nearby and has experience with this type of prosthesis.

Hopefully, they can adjust better than I did. Either way life goes on.

At least this fall has been reasonably calm, and somewhat sunny-side up :) I agree with Jackie, each seasons is special, mind you the mind numbing cold I could do without!

Replete - what a great word! Always enjoy listening to your music, reading your stories/ thoughts of the day, and yes I think you are living an unusual and unique life, but it is all good! Rich or poor,  after all is said and done, being a good soul is what counts.

Sending good thoughts to you and your Mom.  Be well :)

The "faithful" cannot thank you enough for sharing all that you do with us. Your music, stories and memories are always welcomed and appreciated. Your music has had a profound impact on my life and if you dont mind, I'll be your "faithful" forever.   I sometimes visit my old neighbourhood just to bring back some memories, the drive down the streets and the favourite sites transport me back to a time that was not so complicated.  Burton, never change who you are and remember we are always here for you.  Deb
