Current mood:  sleepy
Category: Travel and Places

There is going to be a little overlap as I didn’t get all the photos uploaded that I wanted too before I wrote the last installment.

Peeking through the plants is one of my sister’s kittahs.  In addition to the two dogs (I pretty much forgot everyone’s names) they have two cats.  This one is a little timid, and for good reason I think.  She has a stalker.

This has been going on for about two years when kittah and doggy met.  This is hilarious.  Their dog spends every waking minute of his day watching this kitty ... intently!  (This is what he is doing in the above picture.) If you stand between them, breaking his line of sight, he will reposition himself so that he can watch the kitty.  He has never attempted to hurt her, and for the most part, she ignores him.  My brother-in-law says he will wake up before the dog.  The dog will then wake up and cock his head around quickly searching for kittah!  Now, this doesn’t apply to all kittahs, JUST this one.  They also have a beautiful male Persian-Siamese mix with blue eyes (seen also in the picture above) that he ignores.  It is JUST this ONE kittah hiding behind the plant.  What does this mean????

While I was in “Northern” California, I also decided to drop in on the governor.  He wasn’t there because of the funeral.  But I did feel free to make myself at home (sort of).  This is the capitol building from the rear side.

This REALLY looks like the inspirtation behind some of the imagery in “Alice In Wonderland!”  Somehow it seems appropriate.  This IS California after all, possibly the most Liberal State in the Union.

The Califonia Senate Chamber.  Very nice and eloquent.

The California House Chambers.  Notice all the identical Dell laptop computers!  Tell me this isn’t a government operation!  LOL

This is the door to the Governor’s office.  Notice the State Patrol?  I suspect this is a duty few want.  This is why you should join the Sheriff’s Department if you want to try law enforcement!  :)

We were able to get past him into the anteroom.  The lady behind the desk is a lot nicer than she looks.  But have no doubt, she IS the gatekeeper!

Hmm, he looks kind of familiar!  Did you know he is the only US governor, and probably the only major global politician to get elected AFTER he showed the whole world his bottom?  Yep, this makes me think of the checkerboard floor in the dome.

It’s curious to see Ronald Reagan’s picture hanging in the Capitol building.  He is an icon to Conservatives and came from probably the most Liberal State in the Union.

Then it was off to meet the Great Kenny Vegas!  LOL This is only a small piece of “sin city’s” skyline!  I arrived around 3 AM so decided to find somewhere to get some rest.  I would meet Kenny sometime that day in the late afternoon.

I camped out here, northeast of the city.  I’m sitting in a small bowl off of the road where no one can see me.  I decided to take advantage of this and clean up.  Who want’s to smell bad when you don’t have too?  Yep, some baby-wipes with some antibacterial soap does wonders.  I also changed my clothes.  Then it hits me!

While driving in, I remembered seeing a sign mentioning an Air Force base in the neighborhood.  Now, when the Russians and Chinese photograph these bases from space, it’s a BIG picture.  They don’t just zoom in on the base.  And, look at my jeep above.  Where do you suppose the license plate is mounted?  Yep, you guessed it!  On the hatch ... which was open!  So, not only did I possibly give someone a show, I might as well have held my license plate over my head proclaiming who I was!  HAHAHAHA!

Did I get photographed?  Who honestly knows.  But ... if I end up on a Russian Porn site, THAT’S how it happened!  I know, I know, that’s my story, but I’m sticking to it!

Finally the big meeting!  Kenny is the second person I’ve met after meeting them on MySpace.  It’s not something I highly recommend as you never know what this person will be like.  There are all kinds of fakes and pretenders.  Well, now I can say first hand, Kenny is no fake.  He is ever bit the genuinely great guy he is on MySpace.  Not that I ever really doubted that.  Just say’n! :) We talked about politics and God.  Then I had to go.  I had to finish up my blog and get moving on down the road.

My next stop was the Grand Canyon because I’ve never been there.  It took me over the Hoover Dam.  I don’t remember ever seeing any night pictures.  I’m sure they are out there.  I’ll have to Google it someday.

I spent all morning looking for it.  I thought it was supposed to be HUGE!  J/K

OK, so when are they going to build a bridge????  Someone’s been slacking!

It really is quite vast!  The energy it would take to carve this out is almost beyond comprehension.  What a treasure!

The tourists are global.  I think I heard about three non-English languages there.  I think these people in front of me are Italian.  There was also the Japanese tour bus.  Then of course, we always hear Spanish, but I don’t know if I can really count that one.

After the Canyon, I decided to get some sleep.  I hadn’t slept since meeting Kenny.  I know, it also served as an excellent excuse to get some off-roading in!  The park is surrounded by national forest.

Looks like a good place to take a nap!

If only my tires could talk!  I would have been cussed out one side then the other!

It’s amazing the beauty we miss in our daily grind.  All we have to do is stop long enough to look at it!

Leaving the park and moving on toward Texas, I noticed the lone houses along the way.  They are scattered about in the middle of the vast empty spaces that defines so much of the Western United States.

As I raced my growing shadows with futility, I began to ponder those lone houses.  Right out in the middle of nowhere.  Lonely isn’t where you are.  It’s what you do and who you are.  When these families take care of living, surrounded by those they care for and who cares for them, I sincerely doubt they are lonely. :)

My next blog will probably be after Texas and Colorado so that I don’t bunch them too close together.  Peace!

Thanks Kathy.  Even in desolation you can find beauty.  Then again, it isn't all people think it is.  For instance, around Flagstaff, it's heavily forested.  Grant it, you don't see a lot of foliage under the trees, but most people don't think of trees and Arizona together.

Don't worry about kudos.  This isn't about that.  This is about my victory lap around the Western US, a salute of sorts.  I'm sharing it with the friends I've met over the last several years on MySpace.  I even considered making them all "friends only" blogs except some of my family don't have MySpace accounts.

I know you are enjoying this trip Ben.  I envy you.  If you get a chance, go through Bryce Canyon.
I was simply amazed at the beauty.  I once took a trip similar to this one you are taking except I was in a van.  I couldn't get through all the beaten paths.  I did cross the Continental Divide in 5 different passes.  What beauty!  America has it all.  Enjoy and thanks for sharing.

I think Bryce Canyon is already in my rear view mirror.  My sister had also recommended it.  It's close to Las Vegas, right?  At least I think it's the same place.  I was going to take her suggestion except sleep won out and I was on a schedule to see Kenny.  I should have posted my current position when I put this blog up.  I'll be sure to do it next time as a sort of record of where I posted these.  I'm doing them far enough away from my destinations to 1) protect the people I'm seeing, and 2) to salute modern technology (invented by capitalists)!  LOL

Thanks for commenting.  It's always a pleasure.  :)

The Canyon is something isn't it. I've never seen anything like it in my life. Excellent blog.

As far as "in your face" splendor goes, I don't think anything can match the spectacular Black Canyon of the Gunnison in Colorado.  However, the Grand Canyon trumps all when it comes to sheer size!

Thanks for commenting.  You've been consistent too!  LOL  I know you have a full plate and I haven't been able to get around to commenting on everyone's blog like I would at home.  It's really appreciated and definitely not expected.

I think I'm going to try something new.  I'm going to try and download some of the CRA podcasts while I'm rolling and see what happens.  That would add to one of my whole points for this blog.  This technology was invented by the "evil" capitalists!  I'm still scratching my head over that one!  Once again, Alice in Wonderland comes to mind!  LOL

I grew up in Colorado and have always considered the Rockies one of the most beautiful places in the US.  However, my sister challenged me to fly over the mountains in Washington with a window seat.  I never thought I would admit this, but from the air, it was far more impressive than the Rockies.  So, your point is well taken!  :)

My, but we are a couple of handsome eligible Myspace batchelors, aren't we?!? Thanks for your complimentary description of my being.  I feel the same way about you, Sir Ben!  Great conversation.  I enjoyed every minute, and look forward to any further banter we may share in the future, hopefully much will be under friendlier political climates?  Cheers, and have a safe and eventful rest of your trip!! :D

It was a great visit.  I had fun!  :)

It took me an enormous amount of time to finish up installment number two, and that was without the latest pictures!  This installment went much quicker as I'm starting to develop a system.  I guess about 3 hours.  Picture blogs are time consuming because you have to go through them and pick the ones you want.  Then you have to smudge license plates and such.  I bit-off a lot when I decided to do a "picture" blog series.  LOL  But, it wasn't like I didn't know what I was getting myself into.  This was part of every report we sent up to highers in Iraq.  My only regret is I'm neglecting the blogs of others.  It feals a little selfish.

I forgot the email address you gave me (verbally).  Email it to me again (MySpace) and I'll send the original picture to you if you want it.  This one was shrunk down in PowerPoint and a blue border added.  You probably don't want that.  :)

I know it's often hard to make ends meet, let alone get enough time off from your typical job.

It's always a pleasure hearing from you.

A drag I can't meet ya along the Texas highway some where. I keep offering a bridge for sale and even offer a bit of the Grand Canyon to buy if a person just wants a bridge but needs a place to put it. Sadly I have had no takers yet.

Well, that was how I intended to meet anyone along the way that wanted to meet.  Just spend an hour or so drinking coffee and jointly condemning Hairy Fox, or whatever!  LOL  You were (are) one of the people I would love to meet in person.  In fact, I think this may have come up already over a year ago before I deployed to Iraq and you were living in Oregon.

I know you posted (friends only) where you moved to and it could have easily been on the way to Central Texas if I took a different East/West route.  However, I certainly would rather not to back-track and lose probably a Day doing so.  I still have a full plate as far as other points of interest I plan to visit on my way back.  As you know, I'm taking a Northern route back.  So, I guess it will have to wait until next time I make the trip.  It's very unfortunate you didn't mention this a few days ago. :(  The loss is certainly mine.

On a more positive note, DR is still on the list and I'm really looking forward to our meet.

Great job Ben!  Reading your blog is almost like sitting next to you with an album on our laps as you explain each shot.  I love your insights about living out on the western plains.  And you described Tucker's obsession with April perfectly.  He's insane.  It's like he's her guardian angel...  but he does love it when she runs!!!  Yes our home is full of furry little characters and we like it that way... it's how we roll!  Keep your guardian angel close and say hi to family for me.  I love you.  B

Thanks for reminding me of their names!  LOL  Oh, btw, Dad did mention your promised trip out here and doesn't think you will make it.  Hint, hint.  I told him you were still planning on doing so as promised.  He said, "Well, when she gets here, she gets here."  LOL

Hey Ben! Sorry I've been MIA, but I just wanted to stop by and let you know I haven't forgotten about you guys and give you kudos.
Great trip! I am jealous. Please enjoy it for me and if you ever stop by DC (I don't recommend it) you know who to call....
PS. Yup this is my natural hair color. Just saving you the question.
I'm glad you've been enjoying yourself. Much deserved. Keep traveling and taking pictures that they are amazing!

Thanks Mila.

It's OK, I know you have a full plate and are having difficulty getting out on MySpace like you would like.  I know your time is a valuable commodity that is in short supply these days.  With this trip, I can identify with that.  In fact, I feel the same way you do as it's been nearly impossible to get out on other blogs like I would like.  This is in some ways a "me" blog as it is a record of my trip, family, friends, and random yet deeply held beliefs about America.  Because of the "selfish" element, I've refused to advertise it or adjust the date forward for a couple of days like I sometimes do with other "issue" blogs.

I am grateful for any commentary, but certainly do not expect it from anyone.  I would be more than happy to post this with no comments.  Of course, any comment is welcome.  :)  Thanks for contributing Mila.  :)

It sounds like you had a great time on your trip Ben..  and the pictures are stunning!!  The capital buildings not too shabby huh? LOL

That's too funny about the dog and catqqq2222222222222222222222222222  (ooops, speaking of cats, Matrix just decided to walk across the keyboard)  Especially the way how he ignores the one, but is obsessed with the other one... poor kitty :)

Judi and I were talking on the phone the other night (it was great to put a voice to the name and words) and we were saying it would be fun to some day have a big 'get together' where we all meet up somewhere.  She said "I'll have to dress up as a lighthouse so people will know who I am"  I cracked up laughing!  She is such a great person!.

OK, now I'm off to Road Trip 2!

It's fun.  I don't know where such an event could be held.  There is a heavy grouping of us East and West with a bunch in Texas.  I say we do it in Texas.  That's almost half way!  :)

Just wait, I haven't posted the last one yet with DR.  :)
