January 15, 2009 - Thursday

Category: Life

:( :( :(

Well, well, well - have you ever woken up late,
and the first thing that happens to you is what
feels like a 2-ton anvil dropping on your head?

That's me, today.  I woke up late, fighting off this shit flu
that's going around.  I got in my car to get my coffee,
popped on Indie 103-1, and....well - you know the rest

INDIE 103-1 HAS CEASED AIRING ON THE FM DIAL

It's no consolation, but in radio, when something gets cancelled
or goes off the air, they don't give you a "heads up" - this kind
of shit just happens - always a "rug pulled out from under the feet"
kind of thing, ya know?

I don't even know what to say at this point...
I feel like someone just sucked the life right out of me...

But I will say this - Indie 103-1FM is/was

THE BEST FM RADIO STATION
WE EVER GOT TO EXPERIENCE!!!

Don't believe me? Just try - TRY - to listen to any other FM station
for more than 15 minutes - let alone any longer - and see if
you can stomach not only the tunes, but the repetition.
Not to mention suffering through DJ's who sound like complete
wankers who know NOTHING about the music...

When Indie came on the scene in December 2003, my
jaw hit the floor. I could NOT believe what I was hearing!
And I knew I had to find out who they were, and work
for them on ANY level...

I even worked for FREE the first three years at the station,
when I did the "Mashup Of The Day" feature and then
eventually "The Smash Mix" and "Neon Noise" airing.

But getting paid is NOT the point....
Creative, artistic freedom IS!

And to be able to be a part of something as amazing as Indie?
There's no price-tag you can put on that, my friends
(Jesus, I hate John McCain - I can't even say
"my friends"
anymore without a sharp pain going down my spine...)

So - Indie will continue online, as they already have
millions of people listening there from around the world.
People in bum-f'ck small US towns with no choices whatsoever -
hell people in major CITIES have shit choices too - and those
serious music fans on every continent, really...

** UPDATE - SAT. JANUARY 31st **

"NEON NOISE" IS NOW ON HIATUS - AND I
STILL CAN'T GET A CONFIRMATION THAT
MY SHOW WILL BE GETTING A DIFFERENT
TIME-SLOT DURING THE WEEK :(

__________________________________________________

Maybe we should all be thrilled & grateful we got to have Indie
for as long as we did? All good things come to an end,
as they say. And we know that's 100% true in life...

In closing, I have to personally say THANK YOU to anyone
reading this, who stumbled upon me BECAUSE of Indie 103-1FM

I've met some of the nicest, coolest, most passionate people
and fervent music fans over the last few years - and each of
you reminded me why I love doing what I do!!!

SO - ONWARD & UPWARD!

All my best,
DJ Paul V.  / Indie 103.1 FM

Great radio in L.A. has died. Why is it the coolest, unique ideas always being the ones to disappear. Been an Indie listener since the start and today was a great shock.

I hope you continue on your musical adventure and VIVA INDIE!!

I was in shock when I went to lunch today.
I was like I was just listening to you on the way into work and now your gone! WTF!!!!!!!!!

I have to agree, when I stumbled onto Indie in Feb of '04, I was thrilled. I was listening to the stuff I heard in the clubs from the best out there in the club scene. And then to think all the new and independent artist and groups that have come into the scene of music through Indie was just amazing! I loved it and couldn't wait to hear what next new song that was going to be rocking me on the dance floor! It also brought me to come into contact with you! That was a blessing in itself! I couldn't wait to get out of the club early just to groove in my car with the girls! Much love to you and everyone that worked on Indie, you won't be forgotten, and you will be missed on the radio. Now I will have to plug in my Ipod and really take off from there, unless I'm home and can get online.
As I listen to Amazing Baby right now streaming, I just want to shed a tear!

LOVE YOU DJ Paul V and R.I.P. INDIE 103.
1 FM!

oh man! i still can't get over it!

but in a way it's good! Indie just out-indied itself! That's like Elton John out-gaying his fanny pack! And that is definitely hard to do!

Now my only concern is what will happen to the shows and also what the heck am I gonna listen to when I'm stuck in traffic! I am NOT about to get an ipod! KCRW better up the ante!

I don't know what it is with 103.1 being a revolving door...

I wasn't around for MARS-FM but I certainly remember Groove Radio.
At least they're still kicking online and on Sirius. It was another revolutionary format ahead of its time. The corporate puppetmasters didn't think that people in LA Metro listen to EDM so with the low ratings Egil was forced out and Groove eventually withered away.

Then along came KDL, a lame attempt at recapturing the glory days of Groove Radio (and MARS-FM from what I have heard).

And now Indie.

Revolutionary. Ahead of its time (or back to the early days of KROQ, whichever you prefer).

Every Saturday night after listening to KCRW in the car, when midnight rolled around, 103.1 it was for my electro fix.

Other times? You never knew what would play. Out of the blue, Justice would come on. Or Fatboy Slim. No set playlist, just what the DJ wanted to play.

The corporate puppetmasters still don't get it. Either that or there are too many sheep out there loving their bubble gum pop.

Signed, another loyal Neon Noise listener

Paul V, I'm one of those that discovered you through listening to Indie. I'm glad that one road led to another, and myspace has helped keep the music feed from stopping (when you weren't on air and in the future).
I always boasted to people that Los Angeles had the best radio; you really CAN'T take anything for granted, huh?

Thanks for the tunes, I'll stick around whenever I can! (unfortunately no longer in the frickin car when I need it...)

I still felt like I was dreaming it all when it happened. I kept going back to the station for like a week because I refused to believe it. It's just so upsetting. Seriously. what else am I supposed to listen to now. I still have it tuned in my car as well. It's time to let go I guess.
:( xx
