Hello everyone!
James here. Thought I'd give you all an update on what is going on in the world of Broken Self.
1. We are currently looking for a new bassist. If you have good equipment, can play our songs (non sloppily) and come up with interesting parts, have the time to meet up at least once a week on a friday or sunday afternoon, and are willing to dedicate yourself to making music with us and pushing us forward, please send us an email, because we want to meet you. We will be trying out as many bassists as we can over the next few weeks (or possibly months) in order to find the right person to join the Broken Self family.
For those of you who are wondering what happened to Gabe, it's the standard case of musical differences. He just hasn't been into our music lately. He's been a great friend and important part of our family, and we are grateful for all he's done for us and certainly still on good terms with him.
2. Here's the deal with the cd situation. We have decided to stop trying to get everything perfect and just get it done and get it out there. The truth is that the tracking was done when the band was in a very early stage (with the exception of the slightly more recent "The Oedipus Complex") and it really shows if you compare the recordings with our live performances. So even though we are proud of the recordings, they will likely never be "perfect" the way we want them to.
The fact that every revised mix takes so much time to be completed only compounds our frustrations, so we're taking a bit of a DIY attitude at this point. Rest assured the newly mixed and mastered versions of the songs are much better than the previous ones on myspace as of now, and we will be uploading the new ones very soon. Stay tuned!
We will also be printing the cds in a cheaper way than originally planned, which means we can get them to you for a cheaper price. We've decided to sell the 4 song demos for $3 each, and give them away for free with the purchase of a $10 shirt. We know these are tough times for everyone and we want to keep it so that anyone can afford to listen to our music and support us. The money we raise will go towards recording a full length album in the future. Hopefully at that point we can get the songs sounding perfect, and likely spend less time on it.
It goes without saying that we're looking for a new producer and engineer for our future projects. Rob Coates did a great job with the work he did, but it's far too hard to communicate and get things done when he lives in a different state and doesn't reply to our emails. Grrr....
3. Anyway, we are really ready to get the ball rolling at this point. We are going to try new ways of getting the word out. First of all, we are assembling a street team. The goal will be to help the Broken Self family grow. We are still in the planning stages so if you are willing to help us out in any way please contact us. We'll give you free stuff and of course, lots of hugs. =)
We will also be recording stuff here and there with a video camera so you can all see what life in a band is like behind the scenes. All the drugs, sex, addiction, drama....well, probably nothing all that crazy, but it should be entertaining!
We will certainly need your feedback on these sorts of things, so please let us know what you think. And please help us spread the word! We appreciate everything all of you have done for us so far, and we need you more than ever as we shift into gear.
Much love,
James, Bonnie, Scott, and Will.
