Well, it's been a long time since I've posted anything here. What can I say? Sure, I've been busy. But that's no excuse. We all are. Guess I've just been lazy – and spending way too much time surfing the internet, toggling between various wine-related sites. (It's the most effective form of procrastination I know!) . . . . Anyway, I thought I'd better give my web browser a bit of a rest and take this opportunity to wish all of you a very, very

Happy Holidays!!!!

This is a season where we're often inundated with annual retrospectives: "best of"s, "top 10"s, "person of the year" etc etc etc. Generally, I don't care much for this sort of stuff. But I certainly am thankful for all the wonderful musical experiences I've had in '07. And since I've only had a chance to mention a small handful of them in previous blog entries, I figured a short list might be the simplest way to at least recognize just a few more highlights of my year. In roughly chronological order:

1) The Dewey Redman memorial concert at St. Peter's Church in New York City on January 7.

2) Getting an advance copy of the new Kneebody recording from Ben Wendel in Calgary in June. Had it on heavy ipod rotation the whole summer.

3) Hearing the young British band Empirical for the first time at the London Jazz Festival (on Thanksgiving night).

4) Touring again (for the first time in 5 years) in November with the incomparable rhythm section team of Reuben Rogers and Gregory Hutchinson. Ah, yes: forward motion!

5) Singing (an excruciatingly out of tune version) of "Hush Little Baby" to my son, every night since I've been back home from this last tour. (Poor child. What horrors I suffer upon him!)

Josh man, it's Jon Berman from Northampton... hope you're well this holiday... I hear you on that singing to your son, I have the same issue, but I find myself making up songs to get him to brush his teeth, etc... you with me?

Caught you at Yale, but had to get to a gig in Hartford so didn't have a chance to say hey afterwords. What a great new album, and I am sure the audience at Yale felt like I did taking in the collective interplay that night... nice, man.

Take care in the new year.

Cheers~

JB

G's Joint

My sincerest late condolences for the loss of your father. I hope that you and your family will still have peace and joy throughout the Holidays. "Back East", nominated for a Grammy up against "Pilgramage". A banner year, once again for the Jazz Instrumental Album. I love them both so dearly. Best of luck with it and I definitely hope your or Michael win.

Peace and Blessings,
Greg

LOL so I guess you won't be doing any vocals o your next release, huh? Congratulations on another great year... Kudos for making it through and honoring your father's memory and legacy. Thanks for yet another great CD, "Back East" and superb live performnces (you were amazing in San Fran and with Joe Lovano to boot!!) and I hope you will continue working with the SFJAZZ Collective. Enjoy your holidays and get some rest so you can do it all again for us next year :)

Ah, yes: forward motion!' Hey Joshua - it was a memorable night for me in Birmingham. UK listening to you play and remarkable too how many young budding musicians were in your audience. WELL DONE - keep up pushing the barriers, and a happy Christmas to you and yours.

Hey Joshua,

Great to see you've fired up the blog again. Its an insightful look into both
the general and specifics of life as a touring/recording musician. You illustrate
it well. I learn something everytime.

In any case, its the music that counts. I've gotten alot out of most everything
you've recorded and have seem the band live in Austin, but its way overdue.
Hope you get back this way soon.

It was also a great pleasure to be able to do that interview for Allaboutjazz a
few years back I really enjoyed that and hope it helped. Thank you for that.

Have a great holiday season. All the best from the Synergy group.

Very sincerely.

Mike

ps - we have a mutual friend in Debbie Deane. I love what you did on her
disc. Very cool!
