Current mood:  contemplative
So, having now seen this phrase in national press, discussed on national radio etc, I feel it is about time I try explain myself.

What is "Gay Jazz"?!!!
Well it started out as a bit of an in joke with my band, when people would ask us how to describe our sound etc.
"So how would you describe your sound? What do you sound like, what sort of music do you play...................."
These are the worst questions you could ask a musician / songwriter!!
Music is subjective, an opinion, and everyone's is different. But I guess you can get to a generalisation.

Words are funny, and in this day and age with the internet, mis-quoting, things being taken out of context, you have to be very careful.
Words also have several meanings. For example - the word 'gay'!!
When we'd say "gay jazz" it was meant in jest, in the sort of happy "jazz hands" sense of the word. But when I'm not there to provide the visual of jazz hands, this could be mis-interpreted. So that is why I am officially retracting "Gay jazz"!!!!

Now for the real problem though. The more interviews I do through Codeine velvet Club, the more people are asking 'so what is your own style of music like Lou'.
SO I need your help!!! What the hell is my music like?
To me, well its just me. Its my music! There's loads of influences - pop, jazz, caberet, big band, blues.............................
But i really need some better way of explaining this, so I am opening it up to you guys.

What style of music does Lou Hickey play/write?
Answers on a postcard :p

When I first listened to your music I instantly thought of Cabaret Jazz, but that is only one persons opinion.

Good luck with your search for words!

The term "Maverick Jazz" came to mind, as it sounded like nothing I had heard before. Don't follow the rules! ;D
