Remember Günther Wallraff? The brilliant German journalist who got famous in the seventies by going undercover and revealing different things (extremely bad working conditions for immigrants, for example).
Well, he still knows how to stir it up. In Köln (Cologne) where he lives, he publicly supported the building of a mosque even though a lot of people were against it - which made the group of muslims behind the plans ask him if he wanted to join a support group. Sure, he said. On the condition that on the opening he could make a reading in the mosque. But of course, they exclaimed: That would be an honour! What would you like to read?
The Satanic Verses, Günther answered, tongue-in-cheek...
Fantastic or what? Of course, the usual suspects went crazy: Wallraff had no right to be so colonialistic, they said. Idiots.
Wallraff's point was and is clear. Dialogue is necessary - as is the willingness to open your mind and learn something. Most muslims have never even fucking read the book. Well read it - and who knows, you might even have a laugh... And so what if it is blasfemic? What is it with religious people and shoulder chips?
