SADPLANT “CT Punx” CD review by Drew Steele
As it sez on the title track “labels we don’t need them, we’ll do it DIY!!” This band basically runs like a non-profit organization!! ($3 T-Shirts(!!!), Full albums for $2 or a ridiculously low 50 cents if you get the CD in a plastic sleeve(Fuckin insanity!!!!) people didn’t sell shit for this cheap 25 years ago and yeah, I consulted legendary Beantown zine writer Al Quint on this one!) For the 1st time in my 20+ years of going to punk shows I actually felt guilty about not spending enough on my T-shirt and CD’S! OK, now to the album, first thing you’ll notice is the heavy treble on the guitar and lead vocs. When I asked axe wielder and frontman Benny Social if someone made a mistake on the recording and he stated “No, Drew I LOVE the treble!!!” Mr. Social has a definite FREEZE and U.K. SUBS influence on his guitar playing and sometimes his vocals remind me of Jason from RKL on their Mystic releases. Song tempos ranged from the Thrash on “CT Punx” and “Sellout”, to the mid-tempo on “Mr. Social” and “The Truth”, to the insane pounding tempo on “Machine” to the Cali skate punk sound on “Summer Session” the band succeeds at all speeds. Also very noticeable are the MAD fills and snare rolls of drummer Dave Timeless whose chops are quite impressive. Amy Wappels is solid on the Bass and B. Vocs as well. Sadplant is a band that actually could stand up in one of my favorite scenes (that being the Boston area scene from 1995 to 2000) and that is not something I throw around every day or lightly! See them live and buy a bucketful of merch kiddies!
