Randy helped me book my first ever gig, and as all these years have gone by, its still something I'll clearly never forget.

Thanks buddy. We'll talk again. And yes, we all had fun

He will be missed. As an employee of the old Livingroom (with the Bubble) I loved being there heand and his brothers taught me many things, the best lesson learned was team work.

Randy will be missed.  I work for a band now that without randy i neveer would have gotten to know so well.  I have yet to meet a niceer club owner.  I have met few nicer people.  Randy was a ri treasure.   My thoughts go out to his family who i have gotten to know since i first worked at the room.

I am absolutly devastated. This is heartbreaking. This man gave me oppurtunities to play my first shows, book my first shows, shit, even SEE my first shows. This is a horrible day in the providence music community. Randy was a loved man. He will be sorely missed and thought of everyday. This man brought me a staple of my youth.

My heart goes out to Charlie and all at the living room. You guys are great people, and my thoughts are with you.

I'm always going to remember the man at the door with his big hat and big smile always talking about the RED SOX and his litlle league team. A man that was proud of his children and talked about them with joy any chance he had. The man who gave me my first gig at 17.  I'm going to miss you Randy.  Rest in peace my friend

Lincoln Little League coach Hien killed by car

Randy C. Hien, the Lincoln Little League coach and owner of a Providence nightclub, was killed today when he was hit by a car in Lincoln.

hien.jpg HIEN

A beloved coach who led his Little League team to the championships -- and who had survived a head-on crash two years ago -- was killed this morning by a passing motorist after he got out of his truck on a local road.

Hien, 57, of Lincoln, who was also the owner of the Living Room nightclub in Providence, had pulled his truck over on the side of Walker Street in Lincoln just before 11 a.m. and had apparently gone to the back of his vehicle for something.

He was at the left rear of the truck when he was hit by a passing motorist, according to Lincoln Police Chief Robert T. Kells.

The motorist pulled over and called police. Police are investigating the accident and would not identify the motorist, Kells said. They have not filed charges.

“He was a Little League champion. He was a well-respected coach and mentor. He is going to be sadly missed by lots of folks. I am having a hard time getting the words out,” Kells said. “A pillar of this community has been taken away

I do not even know what to fucking say...

Many Living Room employees know that this place is a second home to me...if I could sleep there, it would be my first. I spend more waking hours there than I do at home! I am there every other day, supporting the bar, and also supporting every band that plays there. And I know that I wouldn't have grown accustomed to that if it wasn't pretty much the only place I could hang out and have fun at at age 13. So many opportunities have arrisen in the living room for not only me, but for many others. This all obviously rooting around Randy's existence! The Living Room already hasn't been the same since not seeing Randy there the past few years after the last accident. Now I can't imagine what it will be like. Every band that I've been in, I made sure we played there and Randy made that possible!

He was like a godfather to all of us and will be so dearly missed. My thoughts, along with those of many others, go out to Charlie, the rest of his family, Living Room employees, and all who ever got the chance to meet this man!

May God rest his soul in peace and may we all remember Randy for what he has done for this community and our music scene!

Joseph William

I'm the pizza guy from Sicilia's who used to deliver to Randy and Charlie at there apt and at the Living Room. I used to pet their dog in the doorway when I delivered to their apt. Randy always made me feel welcome at the club. He always invited me and when I was broke one time and wanted to see Max Creek I finally took him up on his invite. I was his guest that nite. Charlie extended the same hospitality to me for a Creek show once last year. I brought him a pizza the next show! Anyway my hat goes off to Randy who was always nice to me. My heartfelt condolences to Charlie too.

MY MORNING RADIO

I just heard about Randy's passing the other day from a friend and I couldn't belive it. As a local musician, the Living Room has been the lifeblood of my existance on the local scene. Randy was a big part of that. To all the employees at the Living Room and to Randy's friends and family, I extend my deepest sympathy for your loss. He was a great man, with a great heart and he will be missed, not only in the local music scene, but in the community as well.

Sincerely,
Brian

as someone who's gone to the living room since it was behind the bubble, he really provided RI with some significant culture (yes nightclubs contribute to culture and the living room was one of the significant clubs that defined its genre in ri nightlife).  a lot of great bands and an interesting place to see them.

Thank you, Randy

Good For The Jews

I'd heard the news awhile ago, and only just found this tribute page. The first rock show I ever saw, and the first punk rock show, were both at the Living Room. I lived in Providence for six years, and went there to see a band at least once a week -- the Schemers, the Detectives, the Words, Hi-Beams, the Probers, great bands from Boston, bands signed to indie labels that few other club owners would take a chance on. I saw R.E.M. at the Living Room, with about 100 people in attendance. (Somewhere, I still have the mono bootleg I made from the crowd on a Radio Shack cassette player.) Eventually, Randy and Brian even hired me to D.J. at the club. I can't imagine how Rhode Island's music scene -- the bands, the fans, the clubs -- would have ever grown if he hadn't been around. Thanks for everything, Randy.

With love,

Rob Tannenbaum

I used to play at the Living Room back in the 90's in Train of Thought. I was reminiscing over old times, and found out by accident that Randy died in 2006. Very sorry for your family. He was a great guy. :(

To Randy and Family- The music scene here couldn't exist today without ll your help. You helped the first local band here i joined, THe Nads, Followed by Action Faction, A stint in Rash Of Stabbings, etc. You gave a home to many bands like the ones i played in, even though we weren't commercially viable. I got a taste of what life playing on the stage could be. You opened that door. I will be eternally grateful. I am playing once again and think of those days with a smile. Randy hein will always be missed-Bob Kropp c/o Stone Cold Blues
