Who Gives Kudos:

Saturday June 29th and Dundee is full of puddles, punters and the non-thrilling Thrills are playing at Fat Sam's. Could a summer Saturday night get more disappointing? It rains and rains and doesn't stop raining. Cigarettes aren't even staying alight. So the brave souls who have ventured out to Yuppies for the long weekend of Dundee bands really, really need a good time.

Unfortunately, the shoebox soundsystem doesn't deliver. But The Brogues have a front man who could also be a stand-up comic in Marc O'Neill and a bassist who dances like a loony (Sean) so, even while waiting for the sound system to maybe get it right and guitars to be tuned, the audience are entertained. The hall and the balcony are packed: girls on shoulders, arms over barriers as the band launch into 'She Gets Me Up' (apparently about make-up sex). Heads nod and bodies that can move, do so. After 'Mr. Valentine', Marc discovers his mic isn't working but Ronnie's is. Ronnie tries to hang on to his mic but finally gives up and swaps round after a comical mini-tussle over mic boxes. The reggae/ska drum beat introduces the irrepressible 'Mad House' with a relentless energy felt by the whole crowd. 'Carry on' is so well-known it becomes a singalong and the elegiac 'Fights, Laughs and Arguments' has the crowd both moving and singing.

Despite the ever failing fight with the sound system and engineers leaping on and off stage, calling over mics 'Can I hear the drum?', The Brogues play with all their heart and obviously have a blast…you can feel them, if not all of the guitars. And if you can feel a band with a dodgy soundsystem, you know they have it.

Gosh.
Marc's microphone stopped working when we came to see you too.
Coincidence?
Well, yes probably.
