Over the last 10 years (on and off) I have been working on my latest book The Naked Truth: From the Shadows of the Bible www.jrfarrellbooks.com and last December I decided to finally get it published. It was a very exciting time, but I did not want to rush the process - I wanted to do everything as professional as possible. I hired an illustrator who did a phenomenal job on the cover and I hired an editor through my Publisher. I must have read the manuscript at least 15 different times – anyone who has ever had to go through their own work and look at the same things over and over again overlooks typographical errors. It’s common to do so because the reader is not reading the work, they are basically memorizing it. So I realized I needed an editor to get a fresh new set of eyes. I did something that most new authors do – I put my total trust and confidence in the editor to comb through the manuscript and make appropriate changes where needed. Big mistake. Of course I was sent the final galley and proofs, but again I let the trust issue get in the way and I got lazy. What happened? The book was released on May 20th and purchases were being made. Little did I know the editor sent an unedited version of the manuscript to be printed leaving more than 200 grammatical errors in the book that was being purchased and circulated. I was pissed to say the least. Perhaps more at myself than anyone else. The Publisher is currently working with me to rectify the problem but all sales have been frozen until I am fully satisfied. So long for professionalism. My advice to anyone who is getting anything published – take your time. If you read your work 100 times, take time away and start again. If an editor digs at it, follow them every step of the way.
