Christian Rover is deeply saddened by the news that Esbjörn Svensson has passed on Saturday June 14th, 2008 in a tragic diving accident. To many musicians and fans alike Esbjörn Svensson and his trio were a source of inspiration and a guiding star.
E.S.T. were loved for their open approach to music, allowing for spontaneous creativity and sensitive interplay at its best. Aside from their musical legacy they inspired by talent and perseverance. It might be noted that musical and popular success didn't come overnight. In a fast paced music world over many years E.S.T. worked together as a band and developed their own language. They showed others what can be achieved, when a band sets aside egos and pursues a common goal overcoming the many obstacles along the way collectively. A European documentary shows the band travelling for miles together in a van, driven not by a chauffeur but by the band members taking turns. Maybe this illustrates the point perfectly. Christian Rover only met E.S.T. once, having breakfast with the band in Zurich when tour paths crossed. Despite the rigors of touring they left an impression of a band at relaxed ease.
Esbjörn Svensson will be missed. Our thoughts go out to his family, band members and friends.
Thank you for inspiring us all!
