A half century ago, historian Richard Hofstadter wrote a seminal book entitled, "The Paranoid Style in American Politics' which traced the ongoing examples in our nation's history of paranoia engulfing public opinion and leading to the Tea Party outbursts we currently are witnessing. Sarah Palin is simply a new example of frightening the population with tales of "those people" trying to take over "our country." Palin plays to the rustic mythology of America which functions on the proposition that those raised in rural areas of the nation have not been contaminated by the large city "foreign influences" that corrupt our youth and destroy the moral fabric of our nation. If Sarah had been around in the sixties she would be leading the fight to cut hair of any boy who had the audacity to wear his hair long or in a pony tail. Of course, today, the rustic male folk wander around high on marijuana and twirling their pony tails. Isn't it quaint that a woman who wants childen to "just say no" to sex prior to marriage has a young mother on her hand and Mom Sarah has banned the father from seeing his child. I assume this is simply upholding moral standards.
Hofstadter's book describes the anti-Catholic paranoia which swept America during most of the 19th century in reaction to Protestant hatred of Catholics, particularly, the savage drunken Irish who were pouring into American cities. Gee, if Sarah was around in 1846 she would be wandering the nation warning about priests seducing nuns in the evil monasteries. Or, if she was in rural America in the 1890s, one readily could imagine her hysterical denunciation of "Wall Street" and them "Jews' and "Eyetalians" flooding into our cities bringing crime and filth to the clean world of Protestant America. In Sarah's America, there is always, "them people" and "we Americans" even as she preaches the need to instill patriotism in the country!
If an intelligent idea about economics or world affairs entered her mind it would die of loneliness. She is against 'government dictating medical treatment" even as she insists the government can not allow abortion treatment. Her solution to any economic problem is "cutting taxes." Yeah, cutting taxes when the deficit is over a trillion dollars. But, to the paranoid speaker, the only concern is wiping out "evil" on the assumption if "evil people" are gone then prosperity and joy will return to America. You see, that is what God wants, -low taxes and no 'furriners" in this country.
Should we take her seriously? Not really. I have yet to hear her pronounce a single economic solution that would help this nation. She lacks an economic or foreign policy program other than telling us what she is against. She wants to end terrorism, but has she ever offered a single idea on how to accomplish that? Sarah is the ultimate con woman, all fluff and no substance. She is to politics what Bernie Madoff is to economics-- you think he actually explained how to make money, but on reflection realize he said words that seem to express something about the stock market that has the appearance of sense.
So, why does she obtain popularity? Sarah Palin is an instrument of right wing ideologues who use her as a front in order to deflect any serious examination of their programs. Right now, fear is common in this country due to the job situation. I have been constantly stating my concern that Barack Obama has made an historic mistake by not making jobs his Number One concern!! Sorry, Barack, Jobs not health care is what most frightens Americans today. By not taking dramatic action for jobs, he allows the Sarah Palins an audience among the frightened of this nation.
