i-Mart – Creative Market
"…and so the exciting 'i-Mart' project began, calling on the brightest creatives in South China to make their very own flea market."
In 2005, Chinese student Wang Yiying at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in London wrote the book "Fashion Market". Featuring interviews with 16 artists and designers at London's Spitalfield's and Portobello Market, the book's popularity among young Chinese spurned the idea of a creative flea market in China. But that's not as easy as it sounds, with city administrators frowning upon street stalls, branding them unworthy.
Inspired by the book, Guangzhou-based City Pictorial magazine decided to challenge this misunderstanding, and prove that flea markets can be positive places where fresh original creativity rises, flows and grows.
"Creative markets are already very popular abroad. But there's no such cool place in China for young talent to show their works. Since we have the resources, why not create one by ourselves?" says Liu Qiongxiong, editorial director of City Pictorial. And the exciting "i-Mart" project began, calling on the brightest creatives in South China.
The first "i-Mart" was launched on a basketball field in Guangzhou last July, drawing crowds of local youngsters from designers and art students to Hip-Hop dancers and rappers. Young designers were able to experience the fun of selling their works and at the same time make connections with other like-minded artists.
"i-Mart" has now become a regular event every two months and is attracting more and more fresh talent and a growing number of experienced artists. Support has never been better, with both government and advertisers on board. And it's not just restricted to Guangzhou, 'i-Mart" has successfully developed its brand of creative youth culture in other cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Xiamen, breathing life into the respective scenes through its carnival-like atmosphere.
