2010-2012 Honors Study Topic Announced The 2010-2012 Honors Study Topic will be The Democratization of Information: Power, Peril, and Promise. The topic will focus on the history of the democratization of information as well as the explosion of information available through the internet and such ancillary subjects as social networks; 24-hour news access; increased dependency on technology; and the effects on government, education, the arts and the global community.

Fall 2009 Orientations: We have received the invitation letters and will hopefully have them all mailed by the end of this week. If you know someone who meets the requirements, please encourage them to join. We have also had to move our orientations back a week. They will be on Tuesday September at 6:00 and September at 2:00. A signup sheet and post it on the Phi Theta Kappa bulletin board in the ADM building, which is located across from room 148.

Campus Clean Up: On September 18 we are participating, along with the Upward Bound kids, in a Campus Clean Up, with the main focus being on cigarette litter. We were originally supposed to meet at 1:00 in room 303 OTB, however a class is being held in that room. We have been moved to room 257 ATB (just above the computer lab in the ATB). We will be meeting in 257 ATB at 11:00 due to a scheduling conflict.. We are expected to wrap up with the litter pick-up around 12:30 and will be heading back down to the OTB building for lunch. Those who participate are welcomed to stay and eat pizza for lunch.

Campus Clean-Up Research Team The research team is supposed to be researching the effects of cigarette litter and possible solutions to improve it; we plan to create a poster presentation of the findings for display at the Regional Honors in Action Conference. Has anyone begun research yet? If so, what kind of information have you compiled?

If you would still like to help in any way with the research project, please add your name to the signup sheet. It is posted on the Phi Theta Kappa bulletin board in the ADM building which is located across from room 148.

Cardboard Nation: We will be taking part in the Warm Blessing Soup Kitchen’s “Cardboard Nation” Fundraiser Event that is taking place on campus on September 18. Volunteers would help with registration, collect donations, and count total donations. We anticipate being there from approximately 5-9 pm. I have created a signup sheet for those interested in volunteering at this event.

Kentucky Collegiate Leadership Conference: The 2009 Kentucky Collegiate Leadership Conference will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2009 at Cowgill Business and Education Building at Transylvania University. This is meant to serve as a generalist leadership conference for undergraduate students across the Commonwealth of Kentucky. There will be three workshop blocks during the conference, with six sessions being offered in each block. Each workshop block is 50 minutes.. If you are interested in attending this conference, let Allison or Debbie know. We’ll find out the deadline for registration. This would be a great opportunity for anyone wishing to learn leadership skills.

Regional Honors in Action Conference: The Honors in Action Conference will be held on October 9-10 at Bellarmine University in Louisville. September 24 is the registration deadline. If you would like to attend, please sign the signup sheet on our bulletin board, or contact Jacqueline or one of the officers. The regional officers from our chapter will participate in and lead some of the sessions. We will also be discussing our Tri-Regional Common Reading Project book, House of Abraham, by Stephen Berry. We would still like to encourage everyone to read the book. We need to meet before the conference and have a brainstorming session about possible book discussion questions. Other business related to the conference:

o   Regional Challenges for the Honors in Action Conference:

§    The Kentucky Regional Officers are asking chapters to bring a cash/check donation for the American Red Cross in support of our regional service project for the Red Cross. We are challenging all members to donate whatever amount you can to this wonderful program. We need to mail the total donation to Margo Hamm, our Regional Director, prior to the conference.

§    The Kentucky Regional Officer team is also challenging each chapter to bring a case of creamy peanut butter to our fall conference in support of a regional service project. The peanut butter will be shipped to a mission school in Haiti. If you would like to contribute or need more information, contact our advisor or one of the officers.

§    We need to discuss our Honors in Action poster presentation for the conference. We need to select one of our Honors in Action projects for the poster (e.g. Operation Green event held in April or Cigarette Liter Prevention). If you would like to help with the poster, contact our advisor or one of the officers.

Pop Tabs for Ronald McDonald Class: We will turn in our total donations at the Honors in Action Convention on October 9.Please bring collected pop tabs to the meetings on October 5th & 6th.
