Review by Larry
Had they not just driven in from Saint John's, Newfoundland, Ottawa's Rough Sea looked like they could have just hopped a freight train or hitched into Halifax. OK, so it's a generalization, but they did have this certain A.L.F. house anarcho-vegan punk aesthetic that screamed militant D.I.Y. and dumpster diving ways. Anyway, after checking out their web 2.0 profile on a certain NewsCorp website, it seemed like there was something genuine about the Rough Seas.
The Rough Sea set solidified this assertion with wit, sensitivity and musical magic as they wooed my ears with their folksy fun. While I stooped and sipped on Olands beer in the back of Gus', the heavy handed Tom Waits-esque voice of Justin Kops; the meek voice of Christina; and simplistic stringed stylin's were at times like something I would want to call gypsy folk punk. When the Rough Seas dug out the ukulele, it seemed like something Andrew Sisk of Share would pull off in a pinch.
