With active involvement in the Brazilian music scenery, besides working alongside Ed Motta in Tourne Chapter 9, nowadays Paulinho Guitarra also works on the launching of his third solo album “TRANS-SPACE”, issued by Very Cool Music. Entirely authorial, it counts with the following themes: "Os Terráqueos não dão Moleza", specially featuring the solo of Serginho Trombone; "Tatoo Lost in Space", Tatoo being the musician that conducts the banjo arpeggios; "Wes Fuckin' Mood"; "Sideral Ball" with Paulinho playing the bass; "Two People Walkin'"; "First Star, Last Wave", featuring Ricardo Giesta in the lap steel; "Night and Day in Saturn", with the bass sound of Juliano Candido and the drum conduction of Roberto Alemão; the incredible track "The Chicken Pickin' Jazz Party", which Paulinho himself explains: “ ‘The Chicken Pickin’ Jazz Party’ is the sequel of ‘A Vida Sexual Das Aranhas’, from my second album. It tells the story of a spider that manages to escape from the gripe of the female assassin after they make love. In this new song, out of breath after the flight, the spider passes under a fence and ends up in a poultry yard full of lively hungry chicks and chickens! And so it starts a new episode of the poor spider’s saga. In this theme I duel with myself on the talk box!”. The album closes with "Trans Space” that counts with the drums of the master Renato Massa Calmon dueling with the drummer Roberto Alemão. Note: the drums were recorded together, one in front of the other.
Paulinho Guitarra is an instrumental musician, composer and musical producer. He has helped writing Brazilian music history and has been inscribing his name alongside countless artists, performers and composers of the so called Brazilian Popular Music, among Ed Motta, Bebel Gilberto, Tim Maia, Sidney Magal, Cassiano, Hyldon, Marina Lima, Cláudio Zoli, Cazuza, Gerson King Combo, Cassiano, Sandra de Sá, Paula Lima, Carlos Dafé, Banda Black Rio, Leo Gandelman and others.
In 1991, he recorded his first solo album “Paulinho Guitarra” released by the label Niterói Discos, with his own compositions, full of latin and afro influences. “Fluent improviser that masters his instrument, Paulinho Guitarra has absorbed the language of jazz, blues and contemporary pop” (José Domingos Raffaelli, O Globo newspaper, March 15th 1993), with deep roots on Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Pat Martino, Wes Montgomery, Miles Davis and John Coltrane.
He lived actively the period of the funk and soul invasion in the Brazilian music, which explains the title given by the magazine Guitar Player (August 1999): “creator on the Brazilian funk guitar”.
Working with Tim Maia he began to listen and play soul, funk and rhythm and blues. “Tim introduced me to new ranges when I worked with him from 71 to 77”, reveals.
Paulinho Guitarra recorded both Racional albums of Tim Maia and is co-author of the song “O Caminho do Bem”, featured in the soundtrack of the movie “City of God”.
During the 80s, he worked with Marina Lima in concerts and recordings (when he picked up the pop language) and also played with the rock and roll band from Rio de Janeiro “Alynaskyna”.
He began to play professionally at age 12, in 1967 with the group “Os Adolescentes”, known as one of the best ballroom bands of Rio de Janeiro. At that time he met Sérgio Senna, his associate at the recording studio “Sérgio Senna/Paulinho Guitarra”.
“Cited as one of the creators of Brazil’s funk guitar, the guitar player went into the musical set in the 70’s in a ballroom band called Os Adolescentes. Soon, he became Tim Maia’s backup musician, with whom he played for seven years – participating of the cult albums of the series Tim Maia Racional, between 1975 and 1976 and being co-author of the song ‘O Caminho do Bem’, featured in the soundtrack of the movie ‘City of God’.
Later, in the 80’s, he accompanied Marina Lima in the singer’s definitive albums, such as Fullgás (1984) and Todas (1985). His first solo attempt was the LP album Paulinho Guitarra, of 1991, that makes evident the influences of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Wes Montgomery, Miles Davis e John Coltrane. His curriculum also includes participations and recordings with Cláudio Zoli, Bebel Gilberto, Cazuza, Cassiano, Hyldon.
Ed Motta’s permanent since 1994, Paulinho has just released his new solo album The Very Very Cool Cool Band, filled with instrumental themes permeated with jazz, blues, rock, soul and funk.”
(Luis Bissigo, Zero Hora newspaper, March 24th 2005, Porto Alegre, RS)
“...Musician that is part of Ed Motta’s band and has already played with Tim Maia and Cazuza, among others, Paulinho Guitarra shows in his second solo album ‘The Very Very Cool Cool Band’ (Very Cool Music) that, besides being a fluent soloist, he is a great composer, being jazz, blues or original rocks.”
(Além da Guitarra, Antônio Carlos Miguel, Discolândia, O Globo, December 21st 2004).
“(...) Modernist instrumental package. (...) The laboratory of instrumental music does no close during a crisis. New album of the guitarist (...) Paulinho Guitarra (The very cool band, Very Cool Music) (…) musician that has played with Cazuza, Ed Motta, Marina Lima, Bebel Gilberto, Tim Maia e Paula Lima, Paulinho Guitarra, according to the magazine Guitar Player ‘creator on the Brazilian funk guitar’, progresses on the affluents of jazz & blues permeated by the humor of the titles and themes. These are the cases of A Vida Sexual das Aranhas (The Sex Live of the Spiders), that evokes Henry Mancini’s track-like style, the shaking Mulher Esqueleto (Skeleton Woman) in a surfer guitar beat and Festa dos Macacos (Monkey’s Party) in a boggie line.”
(Tárik de Souza, Jornal do Brasil, January 31st 2005).
