"The band are bathed in pink and yellow lights and Smith crouches on one knee while they start up the intro to the reggae lilt of Redondo Beach. This is followed by a lesson in Geordie. A girl at the front wants to stand up but reckons she'll be "hoyd oot" (thrown out). Keen to understand the indigenous population, Smith insists on a translation. She follow this by launching into a typical empowering speech. "When you want to do something, make everyone do it so they can't stop you. That's how you stop wars, save the environment and get out your f*ckin seat if you want to!" Cue: rapturous applause and a handful of people stand up – including the man in front of me. Naturally he is obscenely tall but at least he wasn't wearing a hat."
