Now a new drama is coming from the Obama campaign's Internet Team. This time it doesn't involve stealing a fan's website. Instead, it involves a partnership with Facebook that may have broken FEC rules. The details are still sketchy, but techPresident and Daily Kos both have excellent write-ups on it.

techPresident: Did Facebook Play Favorites with Obama?
Daily Kos: Obama, Facebook, and the Law

For those who have time to look into this further, please post your summaries of the situation, thoughts on it, and further links here.

Thanks!

3 thoughts:

1) I would not concede that every campaign would have jumped, sometimes campaigns have other priorities.

2) Maybe Hughes and Obama approached Facebook with the concept and software and were already to go by the time Facebook agreed

3) This could explain why Obama is not about to rebuke Huges for his part in the myspacegate mess.

If they did something wrong, I hope they pay a huge price, they will with me. If they did nothing wrong, I hope we can help vindicate them. I feel it is too ealry to know the facts enough to make that judgement. I will be waatching this closely.

Anthony

I read all that was available to me at this point.

This needs further investigation but one would think that no matter where a person falls on the subject of "MySpaceGate," this campaign staff (which includes Chris Hughes) would go OUT OF THEIR WAY to avoid another controversy.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that there is looming controversy and uncertainty with many about how this campaign staff is conducting their behind-the-scene affairs. Why would they make another miscalculated judgement?

Time will tell as this plays out with more information.

Well, isn't this interesting?
I find it to be HIGHLY unlikely that it was a mere coincidence that Obama was the only candidate to have an appication upon the opening of Impact. However, how big of a deal is this? Meaning, did it give Obama's campaign an advantage over the other candidates?
I'm no expert on FEC regulations and I think it's way to early to draw conclusions. Hopefully more details will be made available and the Obama camp will address this issue officially.
For now I will say that I am very wary of Chris Hughes. Very wary. My mind is racing, but I will keep my thoughts to myself until more information is available.
One thing, though, it is very interesting how these social networking sites are playing into the 2008 election. Clearly the influence of MySpace, Facebook, etc. is a force to be reckoned with.

It looks like Barack has hired the most valuable techy of all the campaign techies. Having worked at a tech upstart, I learned that they need a great deal of supervision because they only care about innovation and have little interest in protocol. As a matter of fact the company was founded by a group of techies that had a really great idea for a new product, but in the end none of them actually ran the company and only one was on the senior exectutive staff and that was the Chief Techinal Officer of course.

Barack or Rospars or someone needs to pay closer attention to what Chris is doing, because once again he is making Barack's campaign look shady. I wonder when they are going to figure this out.

i totally agree with the earlier post about how the campaign should be avoiding any more absolutely rookie PR mistakes that was "myspacegate." as a former grassroots supporter, i totally understand how joe anthony feels. i think you guys are missing the bigger picture here - chris hughes, joe rospars - the entire national campaign is an extension of the candidate himself. i understand how it feels to hope and pray that obama doesn't know what is going on in his own campaign, i've done that so often. but the realization is this - these people, not just the internet and PR people, will be in the white house in some capacity if he wins. i have to seriously question who obama surrounds himself with - it's a question of judgement. look at who george w has surrounded himself with. it is hard for those of us who so much believed in the "dream" of obama and that he was a "different" type of politician - the fact is he is a politician just like everyone else. this is a presidential campaign - for the most powerful office in the world - he has to do whatever he has to do to win, just like everyone else. all of that would be fine with me, if he had not presented himself and this "campaign" as something other than what it was.

You've got a pretty good grasp of what our picture is, actually.
It seems that where we differ is Obama's ability as a leader. We still believe that mistakes and all, Obama could be the best candidate restore our country, if he apologizes and clarifies the misleading statements.
If he can't do that... well... broader conlusions will be drawn by a lot of people.

unfortunately, i've got a much better grasp than most everyone else. let's just say, i KNOW how joe anthony feels. this campaign is not going to do anything to make this right with joe. they do not even view it as a problem and they never did. i know, because i tried one million times to tell them how terribly they handled it and what a big impact this would have on the campaign. they think that "myspace" is just used by very young people - isn't that obvious from joe rospars blog and the ridiculous blog they put on the "official" myspace page? now there is another scandle with facebook and i'm sure it will be someone else's fault again. i, too, believed that mistakes and all, Obama was once the best candidate. i, too, just knew in my heart that HE didn't know what was really going on in his campaign - and there is much more than what they did to Joe. here's the deal, everything is not as it "seems". EVERY presidential candidate will do whatever it takes to win - regardless of political rhetoric - which may be believed in his/her heart - but nonetheless, "handlers"/"political strategists always control the process in order to WIN. this would not necessarily be a problem if this campaign had not been "presented" itself as something "different." remember this - actions speak louder than words. look what they DID to joe and look what they SAID about joe. in my opinion, that pathetic statement thanking joe for all his hard work on the official myspace page made everything worse. much too little too late, but i already knew that they really didn't care. this comes from a former very very passionate grassroots supporter whose heart is still broken into a million pieces. and believe this, there will be more "joe anthony" stories to come out before this campaign is over - there are more grassroots supporters around the country who have been hurt by this campaign and now see things for what they are. plus, there is much information widely available on this candidate that hardly any "supporters" are looking at - real stuff - like voting records etc. they believe, as i did, in everything that he says - in hope, change and making the world a better place. my gosh...who wouldn't???????

Stilldreaming,

Your views are not unlike a large portion of the community here and our opinions if you read through our previous blogs/comments. Many of us have shared questions of ours with Joe Anthony and replied with answers. Not unlike your attempts to let TeamObama know how this would look to many other grassroots/netroots supporters of his, I/we have sent hundreds of questions to Obama HQ and all of it's off-shoots connected to him to try and get answers. They of course at this point in time have still not replied accordingly to my/our satisfaction to properly put "MySpaceGate" to bed.

Whether I vote for this man at some point in time will be determined how he handles/answers many issues from now until the election. By avoiding this issue, no matter how small or unimportant some may feel it is though, certainly will not bring me any closer to him.

Only time will tell whether he will "do the right thing" or who I will give my vote to.

dammit, dammit, dammit, cant one candidate (besides Dennis Kucinch) every do and be the right thing? And I am not ready to get back on my donkey and tilt at windmills with Dennis like I did in 04.

What the heck is the real world like if the past 20 yrs of nominees, (yes including clinton, though i would love him back again at this point,) is the best this country can do? if Obama is really is just a charming version of the same crap we have had since reagan. dukakis, mondale, ghwbush, clinton, dole, gwb, kerry, gore (who actually looks pretty good these days), is there any hope, should we all get back on our barcoloungers and wiat for the end of the world?

I wanna hit somebody or something!!! I bet a am speaking for more than one person in this group...

ANTHONY - I FEEL YOUR PAIN!

PAPA2GIRLS -

I respect and agree with your post, although I'm not sure what you meant by your quote -

"Anger is the wind that blows out the flame of reason"

I am new to this site so I don't know if you use this quote frequently or if you are implying that I am an angry former supporter of Obama. I sincerely hope that you and the people on this site do not think that I have just appeared on this site as some angry ex-supporter of obama's "out of the blue" i have been watching "myspacegate" and other issues VERY closely from afar without any posts. I certainly did not mean to appear angry - if I am totally wrong about this quote then I am sorry for the miscommunication.

This is very personal to me as it is to you guys even though I have not been posting on myspace all this time. I did not mean to imply that I was the only one who had been trying to get the campaign to see what a terrible thing they did to Joe Anthony...Obviously, from this page, I know that all of you are very committed to getting the "right" resolution to this disaster. I also got the impression that you guys wanted to know any information on this candidate from other people. My message to you is that I did not just write emails to the campaign. For certain reasons, I was able to reach people at the top of the campaign...obviously not the Senator...but people who could have "made a difference" if they had chosen to regarding this matter. I will say again, that didn't go so well as you all know.

Yes, everyone will have to judge for themselves how Barack Obama and his campaign - which in my opinion - you cannot separate the two very far - will handle the rest of the "roadbumps" in this long presidential race.

Nope stilldreaming, it has nothing to do with you at all.

It is my signature tag on my regular email and has been used by my family for generations. :o)

Looking at your posts and mine, there's not much we don't agree on quite frankly.

Your more than welcome here and hope you continue to contribute.
