Here's an interesting little tidbit for you all to ponder on...MSNBC even offers us a little chuckle here too. Perhaps this is to remind the candidates that social networking sites such as MySpace truly are an incredibly valuable tool to reach out to potential voters. We can already see that social networking is making an impact and getting people involved in the political process again! That's got to be a good thing, right?

This is a just a quick glimpse into the article, where they review the MySpace profiles of many of the 2008 Presidential candidates. You can check out the entire article at MSNBC.com using this link. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19213575

Any comments? Post them here.

"MySpace: A place for candidates
When do you hang with an old dude online? When he's running for office!

Helen A.S. Popkin
The era of the presidential debate is over. Candidates complain they don't get enough time to address questions fully, and voters are too busy watching "Nanny 911" to hear the answers.

With so many candidates and so little time between summer run Reality TV shows, the only thing that matters now is social networking skills.

In the first of a three-part Netiquette series, I've invited co-avatar Ree Hines help rate candidate ability to use medium of the people — most especially; MySpace. If you can't choose a candidate based on his or her MySpace profile, why even bother voting?

Barack's MySpace profile is surprisingly amateurish given the fact that so much energy went into obtaining it from the Barack fan who opened it. Most text is written in unprofessional 12-point Arial font. And much like the older candidates, Barack failed to use the "interest" fields correctly.

Helen: Barack's headline is a little mind-control creepy, but it must be working. Check out that six-digit friend count! He's a MySpace rock star! And, according to his profile, straight too.

Ree: Yes, please note the use of "Official" in the headline. This is the MySpace page Barack totally manifest destinied. I could almost see beyond this profile's mad grab for power if it weren't for the fact that he's also created his own social network: My.BarackObama.com! He's taking over faster than Google! How long until he's offering us Campaign ads tailored to our browsing habits? Frankly, I'm a little scared."

I adore Ree's usage of the verb "manifest destinied." How appropriate. John O'Sullivan would be proud ;)

More seriously, Popkin writes, "If you can’t choose a candidate based on his or her MySpace profile, why even bother voting?" I know this is tongue-in-cheek, but I don't think MySpace should be so easily dismissed as a medium for getting people involved. When used correctly social networking sites can wield a lot of power...

So very true, Tara! I agree that dismissing social networking sites such as MySpace would be tragic, there really is a considerable amount of power in the voices of "common" people such as myself...at least I still want to believe that. I just hope that all the presidential campaigns, such as Obama's realize that, and work with us, rather than ignore us, or worse yet, act like we don't matter to them. Bottom line, if I choose to vote for someone, I want to matter to them!

still waiting and hoping...and encouraging "doing the right thing"...

peace and hope, jess

glad to see myspacegate getting some more press, but I have to say, I think the writer was picking on Obama on the other issue of site appearance, on one hand calling it amatuersih, then closing with: He's taking over faster than Google! How long until he's offering us Campaign ads tailored to our browsing habits? Frankly, I'm a little scared."

Overall, i think she makes the point that as much grief as thery went through and as much grief as they gave "the Barack fan who opened it", they have spent a lot of money for a less than stellar run site. (forgive my sentence structure)

Anthony, I read her point as Senator Obama is steamrolling through no matter the consequences. The "Campaign ads tailored to our browsing habits" point I believe is a veil perspective of a 'Big Brotherish' direction. Therefore the "Frankly, I'm a little scared" follow up.

It is an interesting point of view as I noticed the latest blog on the "official" MS blog. The "Txt "GO" to OBAMA (62262)" blog could be determined to be a bit more intrusive in our everyday lives once we start receiving the Campaign ads instantly any time of the day via the cell phone.

Even though they have all my personal information already from volunteering and donations, I'll have to refrain from letting them intrude on my cell phone with spam ads.
(even for a free bumpersticker)

All in all I thought the article in whole was an interesting perspective.

I'm glad she made the point about the amatuerish appearance especially after all the work that went in to taking it over. I also thought it was funny how they pointed out he didn't use his interests fields properly. (Although I don't use every field on myspace "correctly" either)

I'm glad someone else noticed how amateurish Barack's myspace page was 'given the fact that so much energy went into obtaining it from the Barack fan who opened it.'...my favorite quote of the article. Thanks for finding this article...I think it just abut sums up the whole MySpaceGate.
